To Portaphile or not to Portaphile?

I've canceled my Headfive reservation (edit: no more! see below), mostly because I didn't mind waiting three more months with my current setup... And because I'm somehow more intrigued by portable amps...


My first choice at the moment is the Portaphile V2^2 maxed. Should I go for it without a second thought? Or is there anything better out there for my HD650, for desktop use only so not necessarily portable, and strictly below $300 ? Please help me out before I go nuts

I'd say you couldn't go wrong with the V2^2 Maxxed. Supposedly it can compete with the HeadAmp AE-1 and RSA Hornet, which are both high-end amps.

Get an used Musical Fidelity, X-Can V2 or V3. They can be found below $250 and $300 respectively. Good luck.

Yeah, it sure can since it's a well designed portable amp. Andrea, I'm not sure if you want to go the path of portable amps if you're looking forward to just using them in nonportable situations. Portable amplifiers are overrated imho. I mean, a G-Lite or M^3 (and most likely the Headfive) are basically capable of trouncing all of the portable amplifiers near their pricerange.

I've just sent Jan an email to re-reserve my Headfive - that is, to reverse (sorry for the unwanted play on words) my previous still unanswered today's email - and I won't let it go anymore
