I've had my ultrasone dj1 for about 4 months now and I just don't like them. I want something that sounds like my sennheisers. The ultrasones are detailed, but they are harsh, not natural, and not organic sounding. They also offer very little "depth" or soundstage. Maybe they would be better for hardcore rockers or something. They are also fatiguing (to me). I miss my HD280 I had back in the day...I also miss the K81DJ's I had just before I got these.

So I will need something closed, because these were my "secondary" phones which I travel with and mow the lawn with.

I was thinking about the AKG K271S, the HD25-SP, or the Equation RP21. Any other suggestions on a good pair of closed phones in the <$150 range?

check out both the audio technica es-7, very much a fun phone that's finally getting some head-fi attention these days, and also check out the akg k181dj, a step up both in build and sound from the k81s, with that clean akg midrange.

Great suggestion of ES7, you can scratch K271S out of your list if you are not planning on amping them. HD25-SP are known to be quite mediocre, but HD25-1 is probably what you want to check out instead. RP21, not sure, a bit concern about comfort, build quality (all that I saw for sale had headband seam torn), and with these ugly orange cups I wouldn't dare to wear them in public.

yeah anything under the top of the line from ultrasone is really not worth it.

especially the DJ1 style cups. they have a closed out feel to the sound. the proline style cups help quite a bit, and then opening those proline style cups liek the proline 2500, and the 2200's is like wow. the plastic "bufferboard" in the dj1 style cups doesnt help much either.

i say go for the RP21, ive got a few friends going for them after auditioning a pair locally. i myself would get them but uh... i already have proline750's...modded...a little...

It looks like the HD25-1 would be expensive. Any idea of the lowest price I could find for them? Or maybe I could seek out a used pair.
