Another almost lost "classic" from the early 90s that I've been heavy dosing on lately is Three Mile Pilot's excellent and hard banging second album The Chief Assassin to the Sinister. Apparently the story goes that they put out this album on the cheap back in '93 and then Geffen caught wind of them and signed them up and they remastered the album and added three really good songs (and dropped one), in fact one of the added songs is my favorite, and reissued it in '95 for a short while, until unceremoniously dropping them, like so many other really good bands at the time, in that huge wake of Nirvana. So now all that's available is the original Headhunter release. But this one sounds pretty nice, and isn't all that hard to find. Great bass but not all punched up. Still really have to crank the volume which is the way I like it. I think DLeeWebb scored both versions, and might've professed a preference for the sound of the Headhunter issue, but not sure on that. A little bit like that mid 90s version of Girls Against Boys (and don't we all love Venus Luxure No 1 Baby??), with their twin bass sound. Very heavy. Really sounds kind of like a combo of the two bands it spawned, Black Heart Procession and Pinback, but heavier than both combined. Great bands in those two. Really curious to hear what they are gonna do for the upcoming Three Mile Pilot "reunion" album, if it ever happens. They did get together for the Touch and Go Records 25th anniversary show. Some cool footage on youtube. This one even reminds me a little of Slint at times, but more of that Pinback melodic sound. Kind of Television sounding. Very cool. Post-rock meets pre-punk. "Midgaard Serpent", shame that song isn't on the version you can buy new. "(Shalom, be the fire) we breathe the freon that allows this elation (Shalom) its revealing (Shalom) in the light, " Yea, definitely grab the Geffen version, and that's from someone who usually tells people to stay away from the majors.
