Thoughts on DvD player as source?

For somebody with a moderate budget does anyone have thoughts,opinions, suggestions on using a DVD player as a source component(for playing cd's)? I note that some of the moderately priced DVD players have pretty good on- paper specs. The Panasonic F87 as example decodes HDCD,has a audio only function, multi re-master,a 192kHz/24-bit d/a converter and plays just about any type of disc for less than $120.00

The 3960 or 3950 are probably one of the most highly recommended source components for budget users. I haven't used one for dvd but plan on it.
