thought on lower end headphones versus higher end headphones

...that that is why people have amps, and go through so many players, amps, and headphones.
I fully realize there are better than the cheap Koss I've stuck with, and have heard better...but there are many factors involved, including the source, an amp, if available, and the one that keeps me on the cheap side: comfort (so, as you might guess, I'm thinking about trying some canalphones in the future).

If there were some very clear ideal cans, then this forum would not get so much traffic. There is a lot of good equipment, but each person's ears and brain end up desiring something a bit different, and often for different reasons.

Thats probably why I ended up with the headphones I did. I have had "high end" headphones in the past, i.e. Beyer DT880, Senn HD650, Sony CD3000 etc and they never quite lived up to my expectations of them, but thats with my equipment and music.

Now I just use Beyer DT531 out of my Rotel headphone socket, and the sound is pretty much more satisfying than ever... although on audiophile scale they are not all that, but they are great fun... not overly detailed, nicely warm, and the bass is punchy as hell.

I am happy to stay with this more modest system.

Different headphones all have unique amplification needs. Matching your headphones with the right amp is key to getting them to perform well. Also, don't forget that better headphones are also more likely to reveal other weaknesses in your setup.
