Some time ago i got some genuine leather pads for my project.

When i tried them i was dissapointed-it sounded hollow, echoing and bad all-around. Later i noticed that there's two kinds of Genuine leather earpads:
1. The ones that were bought for me in aviation section of Beyerdynamic online store Those have closed backsides, which looks like this:

2. The ones that (supposedly) only available when ordering from Manufacture(i saw a picture of such pads somewhere on head-fi, but can't find it now...) Those have perforated backsides:

Note: the pictures i've posted are not actually images of genuine leather pads, it's posted as explanation, what is closed backside, and what is perforated.

So, i think the reason why my leathers sounded so bad is that ones bought from aviation section are not really meant for music listening and build exclusively for maximum isolation.

So, anyone can confirm or deny this?
Also, if you have genuine leather ones, please tell are yours with closed or perforated backs and where you bought them..
Thanks.

The leather pads on my Beyer DT990's have the holes! They are NOT the totally closed ones. I got them when I ordered my DT990/600's from the Manufacture site.

Excellent post.
I agree with you completely.
I just want to have leather for aestethical reasons. BUT, if i will not be able to find leather ones, that sound good enough i will refuse to use them. As i satated in my DT 770 mod thead, softest pleather pads soubd very good with Beyers, but, you know, this is cheapeswt looking pads in the Universe..
BTW, black isolating AKG velours sounds heavenly with DT 770...
Also, the reason because Beyer leathers sound so pads is their shape. They are like short tube, with parallel sides..(don't know if i explained this appropriate...)

Also, i almost completely sure that my DT 770 came with non isolating velour pads! They were super soft and nothing like closed AKG velours, which is more resilient. Also, the sound was awful with those non-isolating pads-distant, basless and lean. IDK if it was a mistake or Beyer went completely out of their mind.

I will try that. Did it only the other way round in order to find the best pads for the K271...

Do you still have them? If so, just have a look on their holes and the color of the foam material.
And also, just in case you didn't know: the Edition 2005 is far from being a "bass monster"...

I'm under impression that Dt 770\2005 equipped with non isolating velours, that's why they're lean in bass. Even pad mounting system are not designed to accomodate this pads:

Mine had no that white plastic rings, just outer elastic "lip" to hook onto enclosure.

Like I wrote before: light gray in the holes means closed, dark gray/black means open. You can't judge that from a photo taken from above. These plastic rings are from the "cheap" DT series (440, 660, 860).

Also there has been no change in the pads what so ever. The Edition2005 uses the same (closed) cushions that the DT770 Pro-series uses which actually has the strong bass that the DT770 used to be famous for.
The Edition2005 is far from being being bass heavy...at least when plugged into 0 Ohm outputs.

Ever heard a DT770 with open pads? It's like listening to a telephone with more heights!
