I imagine many of you have seen the new iPod commercials promoting an apple music site.

Is 99 cents per song a good deal compared to other music sites? I have only ever used MP3s made from my CDs so I am unfamiliar with paying per song.

It's AAC and requires iTunes, which is Mac only at the moment (soon to change). The 128 kps files are probably in quality between 160-192 kps mp3's. The quality should be better , but online services aren't know for that. Also check out eMusic, which just switched to lame preset standard. There's not a lot of overlap between bands so they're both worth trying out.

Hi guys-
Thanks for the heads up on the other thread. I basically was just wondering if 99 cents was the going rate for single song downloads on the internet.

Well usually, it's a subscription. For example, emusic charges $15.00 or $10.00 a month for unlimited downloads. The other music sites also do that too if I'm not mistaken.

Ahhh yeah. Anyway, eMusic has about the best for price all around for serices. Not much to compare to the Apple store because I can't think of any other that just charges per song (without subscription). The whole albums tend to go for $9.99 at Apple.

check hydrogenaudio, great site for information on formats

The quality of apple's aac music files has been reported to be pretty spotty. Ranging from horrible to better than equivalent mp3s.

Though I personally can't stand steve jobs, it's a pretty impressive service they have.

i think it stinks. you don't have the option to download at higher than 128 kbit AAC. no option for MP3 either so players other an iPod can use them. and its mac-only service at the moment, so it excludes 98% of computer users. 99 cents is a terrible deal. i get most of my CD's from secondspin.com for $5-7 each.
