????

I think you said it. Good looks don't always mean good sound.
And I'm not the first one saying that in here

Broken record. But
I must admit it does look cool, but if you really want a good
portable MP3CD/CD player go with iRiver. That would be my
suggestion. iMP-400 or iMP-350 .. which ever you like (400 is a bit
more expensive but it's definitly worth it, according to owners).

JiPi, I'm curious about your comment on the Panasonic SL-CT800:

"...If you read a little about the CT-800 you'll discover it's a big BIG POS..."

Where exactly did you "read a little" about it? I've looked throughout the net looking for any reviews on it (any reviews), and I've only found the following:

1) Tina's review - She hated it
2) Audiocube's user reviews - Four people liked it
3) ASCII24's review (CT700 model & Japanese) - They liked it, and only complaint was no pause button.

I found one other review on the CT800, but it was in Korean, and I couldn't read it. Good pictures though. But aside from these that I've found, where exactly did you read about the CT-800 being a piece of sh!t? I wish I could find more reviews, but they just don't have them. Any help?

I am very pleased with my SL CT-800. I've paired this with my Sennheiser HD-497 and I've been smiling since. It runs 4 to five days with regular use. Doesn't need an amp with this combo for average listening levels.

I cannot compare the ct800 with that unit since I have not owned that one. Navigation in mp3 gives you album title and track title. It's a single line lcd display. Switching albums and tracks is fast though. Go right on the jog key and you switch tracks. Prolonged press gives you a double beep and you switch albums. Mp3 resolution is of course what you'd expect from mp3, lacking in details.

The manual claims that you get more playing hours running mp3.

I compared it to the late model Sonys. Volume is way stronger for the CT800. The Sony's volume was not acceptable with my Sennheiser HD497.

Note however that from what I understand only .cda (music cd)can played through the optical output jacks. Output on the earphone jacks of course plays all.

To say the least, the CT800 was the best unit I could find among a lot of various Japanese brands here in the Philippines. I've auditioned all that I could.

What further clinched the deal was unanimous admission of store owners that Panasonics do sound good, play louder, and are more durable than Sonys. They sell various brands.

If I may ask you a few last questions.
On ID3 tags, can you switch what you want to view? I mean, if you only want to view artist, or only songs, or only albums?

And lastly, can it read MP3 files that are encoded with VBR?

Not much control except for folder name and track file name. You can toggle on the display like folder-song or song only, etc. Very simple, no vbrs.

I have yet to check on the backlight thing. As it is now, it is on for only a few seconds when a key is pressed.
