There's plenty of strange bands in the USA, it's just that you never hear about them because they are not and probably will never be popular there, like similar bands will be over in Finland, where Extreme Metal is more popular than Pop and Rock combined =)

Actually the inherent joke is that the European Song Contest is (or better:was) about cheesy pop songs appealing to the dumb masses.
This stuff was always instantly usable as elevator music.
