Hello to all, I went and delve in to world of AKG. Yesterday I received the 701 I picked up from a fellow Head-Fi'er. It had a total of 15 hrs on it when I opened the box. I put 10 (yes 10) hrs on them yesterday. Only 225 more to go!

So how do I like them? Am I a convert? Will I throw away my beloved Grado? That will wait for my comprehensive BlackBerry review. LoL. I have to thank and curse everyone here at Head-Fi for helping me appreciate my music much better and helping me spend my money! Please watch for my upcoming review. Thanks, Ross

My point? To share my new 'phones experience will fellow Head-fi'ers. There are many here that share their experiences. That is part of being here. As for my future review, yes I will absolutely do a review as I have done several times here before. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. LoL. Peace, Ross

It would be interesting to hear how the AKGs compare to whatever Grados you were using, as I spent about four hours last night doing just that to my new HD650s and posting about it in my own thread.

Also, guys, he DID say he was going to post a review. Head-fi is as much a social site as it is a serious gear site. We're just a bunch of hi-fi geeks nerding out over our newest toys, we all get extremely enthusiastic when we get new toys.

I hate to sound harsh, but what is the point of your post?
Just to announce you bought something new?
What if we all did that? Can you imagine the mess?

Are you going to do a review here, too?
Sorry, Im just curious..

It is likely that the guy is just excited about his new purchase and wants to share with a bunch of headphone geeks who will share the enthusiasm .

Having said that I agree that perhaps his post would of been better suited
in one of the fine threads that are already established

such as :

K701 appreciation thread..

K701 Impressions ..

would be nice to hear a comparison when you get enough time with the AKGs. i have always been a Sennheiser / Audio Technica guy, but have always been curious about the Grado and AKG experience.

As am I! I haven't spent much time with AKGs, never mind properly-amped AKGs so I'm naturally curious.

As a side note, I did a quick comparison of the 325i goldies and the HD650s here, if you're interested.

They are polar opposites when it comes to soundstaging

My two main phones are a K701 and a Ultimate modded MS-Pro, the MS-Pro after the mod will actually give you a pretty nice soundstage, left to right it will do just as well as the AKG. However the K701 will give you a fantastically "big" (perhaps the better term would be vertical) soundstage. Of the phones I've owned (in my sig) the K701 is the only one with such a sound signature. The two phones work pretty well together, one for classical/low-tempo and anything that benefits from an airy presentation (as the MS-Pro has a really dry sound) and the other for up-tempo/rock.

I have both an AKG 701 and a Grado RS-1i the following are my observations:

1. Soundstage: The 701 has a larger but more diffused soundstage. The RS-1i is however not as large but gives a more accurate presentation. Also it has more 3 dimmensionality and depth. The 701 by contrast has no depth.

2. The Grado lets me hear more of what's going on in the room. This is especially true with classical recordings.

3. The Grado presents a better texture to instruments especially stringed ones.

My source is Rega Apollo CD for digital and Rega P3 with modded RB300 arm for vinyl

Amp: WOO 6 with Sophia Rectifier and Audio Research P3 tubed phono stage.

I am currently an AKG/Grado fan as well. The AKG are for quiet moments and reading. The Grados are for involvement and rocking. It gets hard to read with Grados and party with AKG. They make up a nice compliment to each other.

Looking forward to your review.
