I used to own some sr80's before selling them. The main reason was the comfort factor and I owned some Senn HD595's. I want to get some Grado's again! as I'm finding the Senn's a bit too laid back, the bass in particular isn't it's strong point (sluggish). It makes the music 'boring'

I'm thinking of going straight for some SR225's this time, or is there not enough of a difference between them and the SR80's?

Could someone describe the sound (difference) to me?

From what I remember, the SR80s had deep, fast bass, reasonable mid and reasonable highs. I'll be using hifi components rather than ipods/pc/mp3 player.

Go and buy SR225. Wash the bowls, using soft soap for better comfort or you can buy flats, however the sound would be different. I like them with bowls. It is not day and night differences, but if you going to use it with high end components, SR225 would sound more refined.

Ok, next question

I'm wondering about Beyer's (DT770 or 880) What is their sound like? (I've never heard Beyer cans).

This is how I describe my Senn HD595's and Grado SR80's (from memory)

HD595: Very comfortable, stylish. Muddy bass, brilliant lifelike midrange, highs are too smooth. Better stereo imaging than the Grado's.

SR80's: Rather uncomfortable. Punchy bass, reasonable mids, slightly 'unclean' and forward treble but they are so much 'clearer' than the Senns, like removing layers of cotton wool.

Where do the Beyer models fit in?

I have Sennheiser HD595 & Beyerdnamic DT880 (05). Beyers do actually sound better to me. But i am still missing that bass punch & quantity of it. Midrange is great. But cans might be sometimes too bright.
I am in same position. I am also searching for cans that have good deep bass and are also comfortable because i dont have small ears. They are more on big side.

I recommend you audition before buying.
Even if the SR-225 are a quite safe choice, and certainly a step up from the SR-80.
