"Astronomers in Australia say there are 10 times more stars in the visible universe than all the grains of sand on the world's beaches and deserts.

That figure - presented to the International Astronomical Union conference in Sydney - is the kind that really can be called astronomical:70 sextillion, or seven followed by 22 zeroes .

...But that is only the stars in the visible universe, within range of our telescopes."

Isn`t this cute? I just love sories like this, making it easier for me to cope with the crap of everyday life on this sad planet. In my perfect world, this would be the news of the day.

Wait a minute! The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy states that there are an infinite number of worlds, but not every star has a world. Therefore, there must be more than an infinite number of stars, correct?

Did anyone else think "florida ballot" when they say the thread title?

I don't know about that figure, there could have been a few double-counted stars, a few stars could have been swallowed by a black hole, and other stuff that throws of the count. Recount time!

As stated in the article:

"Dr Simon Driver of the Australian National University says the actual total could be much, much bigger still - in fact, it could be infinite."

I believe the quote ran like this:

"The Universe. Population: zero. We know there is an infinite number of stars in the universe. We also know that not every star has a planet in orbit. Therefore, there must be a finite number of planets. And a finite number divided by an infinite number equals zero."

Math and logic aside, that's one of the best parts of the book.

Ahh, thank you for the correction. Glad to know there are HHGttG fans on this forum.

Brad, with the unbelievable power of the Sennheiser HD-580 on his head, sits back to enjoy a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio episode encoded in 56kBps MP3.
