That would be Exhorder for me. A New Orleans heavy metal band that taught Pantera everything they knew, and were MUCH heavier. Two studio albums, and then broken up......

... weren't they supposed to make a comeback sometime last year? i remember they had the website up and all (including some long rant about how Pantera ripped off their style and made millions from it), but nothing concrete seems to have materialized as yet.

the abrupt stop of the drums on the track "Exhorder" followed by the drummer saying "it's fading out anyway, right?" is classic.

I'm including forced breakups too, because of death or what-have-you:

Joy Division
English Beat
Nirvana
Yaz
The Specials (original lineup)
Bill Evans Trio (with Lefaro)
The Smiths
Portishead
The Bangles (hehe just kidding)

Aren't the Bangles working on a new album?
For me it would be the Gin Blossoms.

I always thought At the Drive-In were destined for good things, but they broke up. And of course lets not forget The Pixies.

I'd have to say the Housemartins, although parts of them continued on in the Beautiful South.
