been there... done that... not with headphones or with that particular song but where the music was distorted and I was thinking it was my equipment not the source material.

Fortunately I have yet to come across any songs that would make me reflow solder joints and such.

I listen to a lot of Drone/Doom/Noize (Boris, Sunn O)), Merzbow, Birchville Cat Motel, Fear Falls Burning,...) and none of those albums could be considered decent test material unless you know them very well.

Very hard to tell where the intended distortion ends

Still Absolutego (special low frequency edition) is a very good test track to see how the lowest freqs perform on a certain setup... but only use after you're certain the setup doesn't distort

Always perform initial listening with a track you know well, and that is very well recorded.

Just found a song that made my Millet Max puke. A Live with Union Mac. the guitars on that made me think that something was busted for sure

Too bad also, because its my friends album, but it sound like crap. Please dont tell him I said so

heh my first test of amplification equipment is usualy with a signal genrator and an osiloscope checking the frequancy response music comes after I'm sure that things are working properly.
