The Woo Audio 6 SE: My Impressions *updated*
Jun 6, 2009 at 3:30 AM Post #16 of 78
Best scenario: you receive the MAD Ear+ and prefers it to the Woo SE6, my Raptor deal falls through and I take the Woo SE6 off ya (cheaper than the Raptor avaialble in the FT/FS forum).

Second best scenario: you receive the MAD Ear+ but still prefer the Woo SE6, I go ahead to close the Raptor deal.

Worse scenario: you prefer the MAD Ear+ and Raptor owner decide to sell it to someone else. Woe is me!

You're going to like the WA6SE even more over time. I think you have a great tube combo there also. I am most happy with the fat bottle 6EW7's in the drive slots. They have the tubish warmth without losing the PRAT and slam.

Actually if you like chicken, you should be fine.

congrats on your purchase. the wa6SE is an exceptional amp.
i've had mine over a year now and even without modifications
it sounds better every day, even now. from my limited experience
this amp sounds its best after a 2 hour warm up period. the highs
will extend forever without any harshness nor sound compressed.
the mids will melt into your ear and the bass sound solid as stone
marble. it's quite amazing how a couple of hour of current running
thru the tubes will do to open things up. enjoy.

takezo, I'm curious about your tube adapter for 6SN7. Does it need any modification to use that type of tube?

and how the tube affect the sound?

no and yes... no for the wa6 but yes for the wa6SE...
for the wa6SE you need to lower the voltage to the
anode and adjust the heater voltage to 6.3 as i've
found it's higher than that when the 6sn7 is used.
don't ask me why. the current should adjust to .6A
which allows for use of low impedance phones too.
without the resistors to make the changes the
current is lower than what's needed to make use of
low impedance phones... i'm still tweaking the values
of resistors in the adaptor to find a sweet spot for
the wa6SE.

on the other hand, i've found the 6dj8 and it's derivatives
more to my liking than the 6sn7 for the music i listen to.
to 6sn7 is super linear and offensive to no one's listening
palate but the 6dj8 has a beautiful coloured tone that
is addictive. it also needs the anode plate voltage to be
lowered to around 130v for the 6dj8 and 150v for the
6922 and 7308 to function a long time. it'll work fine at
200v on the wa6SE without any resistor adjustments
but i'm sure it'll lead towards an early grave for the tube.

but my favorite these days has to be the 6cs7. it requires
a simple adapter and works fine at 200+ volts. the tone
is as sweet as 6922 but with an even more intimate texture,
soundstage and timbre, especially for acoustic instruments.
acoustic guitar, violin and piano sound great with the 6cs7.
it's cheap at $4 a piece too, whereas the 6dj8 and it's sisters
are $10 and up per piece... as much as $50+ for the 7308
gold pin amperexes.

Thanks for the explanation. Too bad, I have WA6SE and no DIY skill. So I guess I should pass this.

Now I just use the 6FD7 with Sophia. It sounds really good and very airy yet smooth at the mid range.

Can't agree more. I am with no DIY skill as well and awaiting a pair of NOS 6FD7 to arrive my doorstep before I fire up the Sophia. Still burning in with stock tubes for now.
