THE WATERCOOLER HEADPHONE EDITION – Headphones, Amps, DACs, and desktop/home audio related – a freewheeling discussion of gear, impressions, music, and musings.

I'm... not so sure about that. I've spent a lot more money after starting to demo things before buying. But everything I bought, I knew I would enjoy. No buyer's remorse.
I'm completely the opposite. I bought almost everything without auditioning (except HD800 and HD820), and I love everything that I bought.
My motto is, "The best headphones (IEMs or whatever) are the ones that I am listening to right now." Regardless of the price.

BTW... I am not an audiophile...just someone who can't imagine the day without listening to music...and I love Hi-Fi (gear).

Cheers!

I suspect that we'll actually see more of these ultra-high-priced headphones as audiophile headphones start to catch on with audiophiles who have traditionally only looked at two-channel setups. TOTL speakers are a whole different league in terms of price compared to TOTL headphones, so to those people, what seems exorbitant to us appears very affordable in comparison. It's like audio gentrification in a way.

That's a disturbingly plausible hypothesis... 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤣

...

Part 1:
My very first headphone experience was what my father owned when I was a toddler around 1972-73. It had a long coiled cord that snaked across the living room to his vinyl system. I’d listen to classical records hours on end and, evidently, fall asleep.

It’s a question I’ve been trying to answer for the longest time.. perhaps some here know: what model are these headphones?

...
Hey Eyal, had a shot at this by cropping out everything except the headphones and doing a reverse image search. Since the shape of the badge on the slider looks quite distinctive I thought there was a good chance it'd yield a result. And happily it did lead to a couple hits on ebay for the Fisher HP-100:

I actually found these Magnavox branded headphones first that feature the same headband before landing on the Fisher. Seems like they're both yet another OEM model meant to round out a large catalog of stereo equipment.

Alan, wow. I'm blown away. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! 🙏🙏🙏

I've been looking for this answer for nearly a year and posted on Head-Fi a couple of times. A few have tried to crack this riddle, including me, and we have we have failed until now. I can't tell you how greatful I am. I missed a heart bit when I saw your post. It is so very kind of you to take this effort.

I will be ordering these ASAP. I can't wait to listen again to my very first headphones... I'll post here with thoses as soon as I'm able to make that happen (perhaps, a comparison photo, who know..:smile_phones:).

Thank you sincerely my friend!!!

I really want to try Immanis again but in home/quiet condition.
At Canjam NYC I didn't particularly find it that special. Had kind of bright wonky treble. A good amount of bass and a bit distant vocals. I didn't like it more than I do Susvara original or Tungsten overall and it was on the more colored side. I still am considering it and am hoping to get a home demo to try it on my Envy AE and 465.
In NYC was using a Raal amp I keep forgetting name of and ADI-2 dac. So maybe different/better source gear will help.

Which amplifier type are you currently using?

The most common amplifier type used by this poll respondants is a transformer-coupled tube amplifier, followed by a solid-state amplifier.

1723349717744.png

Amplifier properties - what importance do you place on the following?

Most notably, respondants most value an amp's sonic value-added characteristics and a low noise floor. The amp toplogy and measurements are, in themselves, not determinant factors.

Each histogram shows the distribution of answers from "Not important" on the left side to "Very important" on the right.

1723350935968.png

This poll was extensive in scope, and in the end, it was very rewarding to read through the results and compile them into this report. I hope you find this summary interesting!

Have a great weekend everyone...

This poll was extensive in scope, and in the end, it was very rewarding to read through the results and compile them into this report. I hope you find this summary interesting!

Have a great weekend everyone...

Very interesting and extensive (market) research! :) I was surprised to see 58.2% using tube amps. Or actually I am not; they just sound so good! :)
Also interesting to see the Aegis that high up, I wonder if that is only because the amp is new or will keep its top place in the next 1-2 years. (To me it also sounded fantastic, and I hope to review it soon.)
Thank you for the work and effort!

:beerchug::beerchug::beerchug:
Glad to be of assistance :beerchug:

I grew up with a pair of Grado SR60 gifted to me by an uncle which I've held onto through countless gear swaps, it's a special thing to have a sentimental connection to the hobby. Best of luck tracking down a copy of those Fishers 🙏

I do wish Zach had tuned the Caldera Closed with the same sub-bass boost as the Atrium Closed has vs the Open, but I do have a Lokius.

I’d love to be able to do an in-home demo of the Holo May and Bliss vs my Yggy and MJ3 to see if I really could tell enough of a difference to make it worth the difference in cost.

I’m also very interested in the ZMF Aegis and ZMF Reference OTL amps, and wondering if they’d offer something along the same lines but better than my Folkvangr. I need to go to a can jam and listen to them along with both versions of the Caldera.
Zach tuned all his closed back variants a little warmer/smoother. That is true for the Caldera closed as well, in relation to the Caldera open. To me personally all his headphones have plenty of bass and while I think ZMF makes the best tuned closed backs, I still prefer their open counterparts. This is true for the Caldera too.

I heard the May/Bliss combo a few times and owned the MJ3. Never heard the Yggy, but I know it is loved by the community. The Holo stack was very clean, clear, detailed with one of the blackest backgrounds I have heard. Had great punch and energy, but ultimately, I was missing the flavour of tube amps which I personally love. The MJ3 is a really fun and energetic amplifier. Great value for its price, but when it comes to resolution and detail retrieval it is not quite on the level of some higher-end amps. For the price it doesn't have to be, just an observation.

Aegis IMO sounds fantastic and while it is not cheap, still offers great value in comparison to other tube amps between 3K-8K. In fact, I am hoping to get one at some point.

It's again interesting to see how many in here are true ZMF Fans. The headphones poll also had them very prominent and now the Aegis comes in surprisingly strong.

Very true, although I always wonder how representative the Head-Fi consumer community is compared to the general Hi-Fi enthusiast community. ZMF is awesome, but they do have a strong presence on this site. (Which IMO is good, but might affect the result of such poll.)

Aug 11, 2024 at 7:14 AM Post #2,640 of 11,854
To be fair, the Aegis had a strong presence, fan base even before ZMF were involved. They were the ones that recognised how good the amp was and worked with @L0rdGwyn to bring it to a wider audience… which I think is a great thing as not everyone was able to build it themselves.
