Powder Burns

Much in the vein of Afghan Whigs, yet more mature and not as edgey. Ani DiFranko contributes some vocal work.
Not as "clever" as Steely Dan but for some reason they come to mind when I listen to this???

Great lyrics and very lush sound.
rates a 7.5 on sound quality and 9 for musicality.

Blackberry Belle is also very good!

Yea, that is a nice record. I may still like the first one best, but they do have kind of a white soul sound like Steely Dan. Not as anal about all of the production stuff, but still very well done, as you say. I think David Sylvian's last record as Nine Horses was a bit more in the Steely Dan production style, but his music tends to be a bit more emotional, especially with that distinctive voice. Very lush sounding, though not as dynamic as the best of Steely Dan.

How's the new Saturnalia with Dulli and Lanegan stack up? I still haven't heard it yet. I saw it got album of the week at Junkmedia: The Gutter Twins | The Gutter Twins : Saturnalia but I haven't had a chance to read much else.

Funny you mention that as I was finishing up the post I thought of adding the same question. I put it in my amazon basket so I'll post back once I give it a spin.
I love lanegan's Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and have most of the Whigs stuff as well.

In my humble opinion Saturnalia is better than Powder Burns and Blackberry Belle and I enjoy both them very much. I'm confident in recommending the Gutter Twins. yup.

Thanks, I'll probably pick it up. One thing about Powder Burns that I don't really care much for is the sound, especially in comparison to the first Twilight Singers, or even Blackberry Belle. They layered on lots of distortion and processing, especially on his voice, but the whole thing just sounds bad. Definitely a lot different from Steely Dan in that respect

Listening to Richard Buckner's great Since right now. Finally picked it up a couple weeks or so ago. Not quite as nice sounding as his first couple, but nearly, and it completes a great trilogy of records from one of my favorites.
