Symphonic metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that combines the heavy drums and guitars of metal with different elements of orchestral-classical music, such as symphonic-instruments, choirs and sometimes a full orchestra, or just keyboard orchestration.
Here at Head-Fi we have an Extreme Metal thread, a regular Metal thread, a Progressive Rock thread. Still I don’t notice (or have ever in 10 years noticed) a Symphonic Metal thread; so here it is.
While the above definition does sum it up, there are actually a fairly wide number of bands in this specific sub-genre of Metal. And while outrageously large number of these bands exist, it seems only a few get super popular. The market is flooded with them, but that doesn’t mean these unknown bands are bad. The real elite reviewers have complaints that none of these bands are original that it’s all basically derivative and boring.
Hopefully here we don’t judge anything (as much ) but find this place a small harbor in the ocean of music. A place where bands can get recommendations and love. Being critical is about 90% of the fun of Head-Fi, yet let’s try to keep it practical here.
So instead of this first post pushing a bunch of albums I’ll concentrate on the sub-genres traits of Symphonic-Metal.
Feel free to post your favorite albums and bands!
