For Senn I would say 580, and for AKG the 601. Audio-techinca is probably the A900 (LTD) or W5000.

i think the sweet spots in the current Grado and Etymotic lines are the RS-1 and ER-4P, respectively. i use a more traditional definition for "sweet spot", though.

I'm going to have to dsiagree with you guys for Sennheiser though. The sweet spot in the Sennheiser line is the HD497. It represents an unrivaled value...period. For Grado's Id be inclined to say HF-1 or MS2

Damn dudes lol we only one of each. The point of this whole topic is to have the best of the best in terms of financal cost. No point in some poor n00b looking this up and seeing 3 choices of one company

Cost is assumingly #1 priority here. What is the cheapest that you surely get good sound quality AND it carries the company's sound signature?

Then A500 will be a sweet spot for Audio technica. Its best value+performance in Audio technica line. For just some sonic improvements A900 will cost you near double and same applied for A900LTD.

It must have a proper definition or title like these two.

"Best bang of the buck for noob's" where they comes from <$50 and as I told for example A500 will blow their mind in just $107. While A900 give them slight improvement over its younger bother.

"Best buy for audiophiles" where audiophile people can invest more on some sonic improvements.

I would make the following changes:

Grado: SR 225 or Alessandro MS1
Sennheiser: HD 580 without doubt...amazing sound for the price. This was the top of the line Sennheiser for a long time, and it's now selling for $160. It's very close to newer models like 600, 650, 595.
Audio-Technica: A500 - it sounds close to A900 and is a great $100 value
