The Stax Thread III

Yep...quoting folks from 6 years ago...but thought I'd give a current endorsement.
The little Loki which I just received IMHO works perfectly in bring my L300 (with leather pads) up to current expectations with regards to the lower frequencies. Nice!

Thanks for this, it's a reminder that I need to re-connect Loki. Took most of the system down and put it into the closet when Hurricane Debbie came a-visiting, and haven't put it all back together yet. (Pending a new arrangement/rack that will let me get to the back of the gear more easily.)

Yep, Stax EQ quite well in general. They have very low distortion and sound pretty clean. The L700 frankly doesn't sound very good without EQ, but fix its weird FR and it really shines. You're leaving a lot of performance on the table if you don't.

The catch is, you have to know how, and learning it takes time.

I bought Loki, too. Even though I don't use EQ, I wanted to see how it changes sound.
All my setups are just a dedicated source to amp or in this case the electrostatic driver so no provision for software EQ which IMHO can mess with the original source material.
The L300 have fairly good body but Electronica also sounds better with a little bit sub reinforcement. :xf_wink:

Electrostatic are notorious for not being good with bass...or not?
But I enjoy listening to electronic music with STAX SR-003 II a lot.
The thing is that it's a bit difficult to make a perfect seal, but when you do...they have great bass...even without EQ. :)

Cheers!

Stock pads?

Not pads...stock tips, and it's hard to find replaceable tips for them :)

Cheers!

So Im cleaning a 009 and 007 for a friend and I have some questions.

The right side on the 009 is about 10DB lower (have to limit the level on the left one to 70% to equal out)
The Mylar seems abit saggy at the edges and seems like something doing the clampening towards the edges has moved around inside there, see pictures attached and please tell me if you understand what it is?

I have removed fine dust and small hairs and it is slightly better now but still seems off.
Impressed by the build quality of the 009.

Tomorrow I will disassemble the 007 and clean it.

From there we will decide if we move the 007 driver over to the 009 housing and do some mods like floating dampended mount and maybe a ring made of some dynamat or O-rings.

I was inspired by Th1nker on the forum and modded a 007mk2 previously with 3dprinted rings to attach zmf pads and get away with the restrictive 007 pad mount setup with metall spring and plate with rubber insert in the senter for amore direct open path of sound.

That is a neat stack, I use my RME ADI-2 to dial in a bass boost. I have Equalizer APO installed but just something about the way the RME EQ works that I like

Something else that also takes place is with the added sub base reinforcement the sound stage will expand somewhat, nicely added width and depth as the mid range and treble have more contrast to work with in creating the illusion.

They are hard to find! I love my SRS 002 set up and getting that seal not always fun. I prefer earwing version better than the plain tips.

Yup, that's a pity, but when you manage to get a good seal, which is not easy, the sound and the bass are just fantastic!
I never think much about whether headphones are priced well due to their sound,
but these made me think for the first time about how they sound way better than the price suggests.

If you have any links for replacement tips...let me know! :)
Earwing tips...are those tips from CES-A1 bundle?

Cheers!
