The Sony 40th Anniversary Walkman Thread
Jun 30, 2019 at 3:57 AM Post #61 of 3,003
I doubt it will be a product release, it will be just a website dedicated to the history of Walkman, maybe they might go crazy and release a limited release of the original walkman.

The Gurdian of the Galaxy made the original Walkman popular among the youth that have never seen a cassette let alone experience the sound of it. So it might be just that.
Concur, a wicked and very unrewarding marketing ploy to sell off similar related audio items come 1 July. Now, if this was old SONY up to the early "ES" days we could have expected something special...

I really hope this is not the case. Sony has released a special anniversary Walkman every five years, starting with the WM-701S for the 10th anniversary in 1989. If they skip the 40th, they might as well post that they are abandoning the brand.

It is suspicious though how late they are. Previous anniversary models appeared early on in the respective year, or even late in the year before, making sure people were aware of the anniversary throughout the year. Now 2019 is half over.

They probably didn't want to distract from the DMP-Z1 and other iems they just released. SONY has released a ton of stuff this year, and this player will be the cherry on top of a 5 layered cake.

On the other hand, all the Sony stuff seem to be discounted globally, hinting to perhaps a new set of release due soon. The IER-Z1R can be purchased for 500 off its original retail. The M9 600 AUD less than its retail. Maybe the retailers know something we don't.

Technically DMP-Z1 is not a walkman, it is a product on its own, so they could very well release the WM1A/Z replacement.

It's already the 1st of July in Japan (albeit very early morning), so assuming they announce it by noon that means we'll know about this mystery DAP within the next 12 hours. We're getting close boys

I don't think Sony will price its 40th anniv walkman so that only the top 1% could afford. It most likely will be an affordable Walkman for the masses.
The walkman was rather elite when it came out..

It's only 8 in the morning in Japan, most are probably still waking up lol. Perhaps they'll spill the beans later in the afternoon

Just to be sure, is it confirmed that this is going to be an announcement of a new DAP? Looking at the site as a whole, it seems to be about the history of the company and doesn't include products that they're selling, which is worrying me a little
