I've owned the Wincing the Night Away CD since the day it came out. It seems that every time I listen to it I get a massive headache. I called it a coincidence for the first few times, and then just put it away because it was unbearable. Today I downloaded Audacity and found the culprit:

Ugh. It's a shame, I generally like the album except for the pain it causes on headphones. Does anybody own some Shins music on vinyl and want to post a waveform for comparison? I certainly hope/pray that the vinyl is mastered a lot better because I find the CD unlistenable

I have both the CD and the vinyl but have never spun the vinyl yet!

I just found a little sack from Amoeba that I socked away a couple months ago. Once I have had a chance to compare them I will try to remember to post in your thread, B-word or no B-word.

I have the vinyl, but haven't heard the CD. Unfortunately I'm not really set up right now to do a capture to get a waveform to compare.

I will say that it doesn't sound all that bad, and certainly doesn't give me a headache. I can notice the compression if I'm looking, but it doesn't bother me at all, overall I'm quite content with the sound. By comparison, the last Blonde Redhead album (on vinyl).... on some tracks it's impossible not to notice compression and flatness (even though it mostly sounds OK).

I'll also say I absolutely love the Shins album.
