well, managed to sacrifice the HD600s in the course of surgery. for those with nibbler fingers and annoyed with the cutouts, here's how to fix it. the retaining coils should be rotated so that the arm rests on the bottom of the socket wall. i managed to severe the lead wire when doing this; pinned the wire between my fat thumb and the edge of the socket. the wire lost. anyway, if you get this far, then run the cable through the frame and into the socket. rotate the coils down to normal position. stay away from the wire. and be sure the coil is seated. now the pins will be pinned against the socket wall by the tensioned coil. at this point, i don't think it's worth the risk.

now, i'm in need of new Senns, but unwilling to break the bank. three options in the same ballpark:

1 - 600 stock
2 - 580 w/equinox
3 - 590 w/equinox

i can't find any reviews dealing with these options. what say y'all?? i seek accuracy. jazz, classical, dino-rock (and phish, not that there's much diff)

ok, i missed a thread a few pages back.

Replacement drivers are a much better choice for the clumbsy DIY'er

Ebonyks,

how old was the dt931? mine was less than a week old and the left driver died on me. I ordered a replacement from Jan. Then I found that BD in Long Island charges $55 for the driver, but if you have the original receipt, it may still be under warranty, and they can repair free of charge. 1-800-293-4463

they're not repairable: one of the coils popped out during all of this. i stepped on it

so, one side has a snapped lead and a missing coil. really isn't worth anything.

i suppose it might be cheaper to have Senn put new drivers in, but given their attitude, i guessed that they'd charge as much as a new 600 (street price ~ $280). the drivers in this pair are copper. from all i've seen here is that current drivers are al-you-min-ee-um. so, i need two; matched, of course. and the gold pinned cable; this one is steel pinned.

love the sound; can't stand the company.

5 bucks? i mainly want em to mess around with, attempt repair, refine soldering skills, etc, not as usable headphones :P and if the other side works, ill know what they sound like at least, unless you decide to warranty them, which im sure what you did voided such, just bad luck really.

sounds like i could actually fix and use them. i'd be very very interested in your broken set.... i've yet to try surgery on on sennheiser. i'd like the whole package, but i'd be satisfied with just the drivers.

I have no need for the drivers. If I can get the 'rest' and turn my 580's into a makeshift 600 I'll be more than happy. I assume this could be done without a whole lot of trouble?

EDIT: Oh yeah you asked a question here

I didn't have a chance to get much of a feeling for the various cords but I can speak for the 580, 590s and 600s in stock trim. To my mind, a 580 with some 'unveiling' mod sounds better than 600's. Subjectively, the 580 is punchier to start with and with my 'panty hose' mod, the highs are on par or better to my ear. The 590 isn't in the same ballpark in my experience...it looks less dorky to wear and is marginally more convenient since its easy to drive but the quality only impressed me until I heard 580s.

wallijonn,

While attempting to solder on a new cable to the terminals on the drivers, my hand slipped, and touched the hair-thick copper wire that connects the driver to the terminal, rendering it dead at the moment.

55 bucks, ay? They quoted me 64 a few months back when i thought one of the drivers was damaged (Turned out to be a worn-out tube)

Regardless, i'd acually rather install it myself. I'm adding a small wire with an RCA connector on it. I'm NOT burning another one of these!

If you're not going to repair the phones and are looking to get a new set, my recommendation would be to get the 580s with Equinox. I think Equinox is the best aftermarket cable for the senns.

I think the 590s aren't in the same league as the 580s/600s Not that they're bad sounding, but they're not as refined.

They're brighter and a bit too exaggerated for my tastes
