The "non-Grado" Driver Grado Thread
Sep 3, 2015 at 10:40 AM Post #541 of 754

I started diying a senngrado.

Using px100ii drivers.

I used a desoldering pump in order to remove the stock wires.

Problem!

The pump sucked the super thin layer of metal on the solder point...

And one dead driver for esteboune!

Morever I tested the other driver.
Using the multimeter I got a continuity on the - and + solder point...

I don't understand!

Anyway, need to buy a pair of px100ii!

One question: what should be a good iron temperature for this task.
Mine is 60w and can go up to 415'c.

Hopefully, I will be able to post my senngrado here sooner or later!

I'm thinking one of the smaller pads just might share a connection with the larger pad that has the problem. Check that out.

Nope.

I do not get any continuity.

Thanks

PX100 II driver is just 32 ohm, so multimeter "beeps" as it does with closed circuit, it's normal.

As for the damaged driver - normally there is a really thin wire, i mean thinner than your hair, attached to solder pad. It's a wire from driver's coil. You can attach this wire to some other solder pad, therefore making the driver alive. It's hard, but doable.

One of my new senngrado's, made of padauk, inspired by RS1's, stock SR325i headband and hardware:

BTW, is there some thread for custom grado's, 'cause I've made a ton of them, and I'd like to share :)

Looking good!

There's the post your Grado mods thread

I might have a solution!

I've a pair of old hd449.

I do not use them because I've better headphones and mainly because the pad are dead.

Here is a picture of the driver.

Will it be compatible with a grado set up?

Thanks in advance for your kind help

small update:

i manage to find 4 screws bellow the grey foam.

the driver it totally encapsulate in plastic.

i guess it is a dead end.

will look for a new px100ii

Very nice job.

I recess the driver just enough so it doesn't touch my ears when I'm using L-Cush pads.

Guys, i just want to know if there is any significant difference in sound when mounted on the woodies between the new px100ii and the older generation px100.

I build mine using the old generation but i know that the newer have better low range.

I've compared PX100 and PX100 II's, back to back, although in different cups (PX100's in padauk, PX100 II in sapelle mahogany, both in wooden adapters). PX100 II's sound signature is slightly more V-shaped, with better low end extension. Older model is a tiny little bit hazy, but still very good. Some of my friends even prefered PX100, maybe because of flatter frequency response and less pronounced treble.

I have found noticeable variations in sound with the 3 PX-100ii drivers that I've used so its also a possible cause of differences in sound and I think a few pages back others might have said the same.

Crap...managed to lift the solder pads off one of my PX100ii drivers this morning. Was hurrying and didn't pay close enough attention to what I was doing.

Anyone ever bring a driver back to life after this?

I had the same problem...

Sorry to inform you that the driver was dead.

I did try to use the super tiny wire from the driver itself, but the challenge was too important!

Good luck.
