The NEW JVC HA-S400. Affordable Carbon Nanotube cans for the masses.

I have been into lightweight headphones lately so I bought the S400. First thing first,I don't buy into what the packaging says. Crisp HD sound and carbon nanotubnes mean nothing until I hear what it sounds like. It sounded like I expected with rolled off treble and OK mids. Bass was far looser than I expected. To the point where I felt there was vibration and thus distortion. My source is a Fiio X1 and its sound signature is a little lean with bass. I was about to pack the S400 back up and return it when I decided to mod it by stabilizing the drivers by surrounding them with modeling clay. That did the trick.

That's exactly how I felt when I listened to them. I still cant understand how I read that someone preferred the s400's over the s500's like they are in two different categories of goodness, and the s400's IMO aren't good.

I have the Soundmagic P30 & Beyer DTX501P and they are dainty in build quality compared to S400 but their sound smokes the S400.

I still own S400 and S500.
The S400 are ok,  not bad but the S500 is much better.

I finally got a pair of these having heard my friend's pair I bought for him a couple years ago recently and having been impressed by them even in comparison to Beyer's dt770 and Senn HD600. Balanced, full sound. For $2x dollars, I almost feel like I should make a charitable donation somewhere or something.

I have
- Sennheiser HD219
-Sennheiser HD205 DJ
-Sennheiser HD202 (sold)
-Sennheiser HD229 (sold)
-Grado SR80i
-Koss PortaPro

and now, the JVC HA-S400!!!!
The cheapest by far here in Brazil and you bet? THE best among the ones I listed.
Very easy to drive!

Superb separation, not harsh, good bass...

The  cons are the sound leakage due to the headphone format and the confort could be a little better.

UPDATE  May 2016
Due to the headphone have much punch, and sometimes more harsh than warm(Philips Fidelio in comparison),it is not possible for me to keep listening for extended periods of time at work, like 1 hour non stop. Maybe due to the power the JVC is a bit nauseating, the first time I feel it with a headphone.
I gave it to my father and he is EXTREMELY satisfied with the JVC has400.
Now at work I use my Sennheiser HD219, an easy headphone for listening long time, soft, light and comfortable.

Thanks guys for this hidden gem.
The creative aurvana live sounds similar, but is WAY more comfortable and has more clarity.
