The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP
Jul 16, 2013 at 7:07 PM Post #6,661 of 9,165
I'm thinking of sending my stock AK100 off to RWA to get the RWAK100 mod done. Just trying to work out what benefit I would gain from this? Other than being able to use a wider variety of IEM's with it are there any other major benefits?

Alternatively do i bite the bullet and go for an AK120...however would I still have issues with IEM's which have a lower impedence??

Can anybody comment on the differences between the RWAK100 and stock AK120??

Not really looking to use this option with an Amp....or certainly not on a regular basis.

I don't think with the AK120 3 ohm impedance you are going to have any issues with iems. Having the wm8740 in dual mode is truly sweet. I am myself leaning towards the AK120 which can be used without amp. It sounds the dap with all of the advantages and without the AK100 limitations. It's expansive but if you stick with it for a little while then it's ok.

I had a modded ak100 and switched to ak120. With the latest firmware, I find it better...more power and authority. No need to amp with iems. For me the perfect compromise in the current offer. Better to pay it a bit lesw though...like on the FS thread.

Thanks for that, I must admit I am verging more towards the AK120, especially with the Dual DAC's and 64Gb Internal memory. I probably plan on keeping an eye open on the FS forum rather than new, but probably need to look at moving my AK100 on before biting and making the jump.

Was that (the AK100) with the older firmware or Listrid's?

If you're gonna get ak120, you might as well get a HM901

I'm also contemplating whether to send my AK100 for a mod or just bite the bullet and get the 120.
Portability and battery life is important to me, so no HM901 or DX100 for me.

My wife might not notice the size difference but will surely notice the brown case of AK120

But that's the great thing. The leather case disguises the very few visual differences between the AK100 and the AK120.

My girlfriend just pointed out what a nice case I had bought for my device, to which I nodded and smiled.

£50 I can explain without problem, £1300.... Not so much!

And if you get a knob protector, you cannot see the difference(front view)
