The New AEON 2: It's The End Of MrSpeakers
Nov 3, 2019 at 11:37 AM Post #151 of 2,052
Would these new Aeon Flow be worth it over something like the Drop Ether CX? I currently have Focal Elex, HD6XX and 58X. I don't really need multiple headphones so perhaps I'm looking for one "end game" headphone. I'm powering my headphones with the THX789 and SDAC-B off my MacBook Pro.

@mrspeakers Quick suggestion from an owner who travels with your headphones (ECX currently). Can you guys start adding straps or, at a minimum, a loop for carabiner (or cord/strap) to your cases? That way, even if the case is too big to put in a backpack, you can easily clip it on. I think this is particularly relevant for the Aeon 2 since you are positioning it as portable, but it would be nice to have on all of your cases. I had to get a third party case for my ECX for just this reason.

Look forward to hearing the Aeon 2 at Axpona in spring. Keep up the great work and congrats on the new branding :)

keep in mind the name change of the company. MrSpeakers is now named Dan Clark Audio

I know that, but "keep in mind" that Dan's username on here is still mrspeakers - hence my reference.

Hard to have one do-it-all and not miss others. If I had to pick one, it's a Harman(bass) EQ'd HD6XX lol
and if I had to say which headphone I miss most it's the Alpha Prime. So if the Ether 2 are anything like those..

Yeah I guess that is true. I do like all three of my headphones in terms of sound so it would be difficult to pick just one. To my ears my Elex sound very similar to my HD6XX except the Elex has a bit more open sound. The Elex are just noticeably heavier than the 6XX. In any case I did have both the (now previous gen) Aeon Flow but sold them both as I didn't like them as much as I thought I would. I am curious about how these would compare to something like the Ether CX from Drop as I am curious about those also. I find the Elex a bit too heavy for my head with annoying pressure from the centre of the headband and not quite enough clamp.

certainly! I understand. It’s a very new circumstance. My intent was to enhance the awareness of the companies name change.

Personally, I think it was a bad move renaming the brand, as MrSpeakers is well known, even if the end user does not know who Dan Clark is, they will probably know what MrSpeakers is all about.

Does the Aeon 2 have the same dodgy earpads as the Aeon 1 ? As mine were deformed after about a week of use. They are only about 2 months old, or slightly more.

Also, can UK distributors get replacement earpads to sell, as I had to import from yourselves/website in the states and after customs and vat, it was over £100 for a pair of pleather pads.

Although I may not agree with the name change, I hope it works out for you in the long term.

Cool.

Regarding deformed pads and how to fix...

Something worth to mention: Digital audio players and portable gear like Mojo often can't drive planars sufficently. Aeon 2C has very low sensitivity and impedance and portabe gears can't supply enough current.

It is not about getting loud enough. Even a smartphone may be able to provide enough decibels of loudless but the sound quality wouldn't be good. I tested Aeon 2C with Astell Kernn SP2000 DAP ($3500 !), the device was getting very hot and the battery was being drained super fast but still unable to supply enough power as the bass slam was lacking (the biggest indicator of lack of power). Most of the entry level destkop gears can't drive it as well, Chord Hugo 2 was finally able to drive it.
Such a hard to drive headphone is contradiction with the foldable portable design.

Hugo2 and Mojo have the exact same Current delivery, with the Hugo2 having slightly higher Voltage output giving it a boost in total max power potential. Generalizations without facts are not helpful.

There is no such thing- is all up to you on where you draw the line. Hobbies can get out of control and never end.

I just ordered the 2's yesterday so haven't heard them yet, but I've been enjoying the original AFC's for over a year now.
Looking forward to a detailed comparison of these two...
