The New AEON 2: It's The End Of MrSpeakers

With the A2c you get the absolute best closed in this price range. It even plays in much higher price ranges. For me the absolute best closed up to 2000 USD!

He sounds absolutely outstanding, can't confirm the criticism. Very pleasant to hear. The best bass foundation I have ever heard on headphones. Extremely beautiful silky mid and high frequencies. Think you will be extremely happy with it. Absolutely test listening.

He needs break-in time. In the beginning he was a bit cloudy in the mids and highs too. But after 20-30 hours it's gone and then absolutely nothing. Simply perfect. What he also needs is performance. 100mW is definitely not enough. Under 500mW it shouldn't be under any circumstances to unfold its full potential. With me, it already sounds great on the iFi micro iDSD BL. With the iCan it can be increased even further. But it also has power in absolute abundance! This is good for it. Pure tube amplifiers are also not possible. They cannot cope with the low ohm.

For me this is the absolute masterpiece of Dan. In addition to that the by far most comfortable overhead I have or had. Nothing pinches or pinches, extremely light, you can listen to it for hours!

This should be flagged for porn! How does the A2C sound on the RME ADI-2 headphone out? Its tempting to sell my current DAC/AMP and go with it as an all-in-one, especially since you can find used ones for relatively cheap.

ADI-2 is an absolutely outstanding DAC/Amp. Absolutely unbeaten in this price range! With others, you pay more than double for the same power! You really can adjust everything! Everything! Bass/Treble, Loudness, EQ and a million other things.

As I said in the ADI thread, the European High-End scene doesn't love it. There it is too cheap, has no melodious name and no aluminium or wooden cabinet! They want things for 10000USD upwards! :joy::innocent:

No, the power is easily enough for the A2c. Has 1200mW output! That is the smallest problem. I wanted more connection variety and a tube amp, so I bought the iCan. It has much more power. You can easily feel it in the bass foundation of the A2c. It is clearly an upgrade from the ADI. But even with the ADI you don't miss anything in the A2c, definitely nothing.

I am looking at a couple of different higher-end closed back options and the Aeon 2 Closed is one of them. I've seen some criticism that it's kind of flat sounding and lacks dynamics. Can anyone elaborate on that?

Other headphones I'm considering but am not really sure about: Ether C Flow 1.1, Ether CX, Fostex TH 900 MK2. Not sure if any of these would be a better pick for me, since I typically listen to Rap/Hip Hop/Rock/Pop

I listen to everything but 90% of the time would be hip-hop and believe me, they're great and don't sound flat. Hov's albums sound incredible and clean, Future just knocks, and the griminess of old school beats from Griselda are just 👌

Oh interesting to know that it's a DCA pick. Currently, I believe the measurements of DAC/AMPs are the most significant factor that determine how a device sounds so I'm leaning towards the Topping, but I do appreciate that there are different schools of thought on this.

You couldn't be more wrong there buddy. But i guess everyone has to figure that one out for themselves...

Hmm most likely I'd be using a THX AAA 789 and Topping D50S to run whatever headphones I end up going for, so I am not anticipating any issues powering them. Appreciate your comment though describing the sound/tonality of the headphones. Thanks!

I'm using the SMSL SP200 THX 888 amp with my A2C, and I feed it with my Mojo in DAC only mode. So:
MacBook >> Mojo >> SP200 >> A2C

tl;dr: DX7PRO+SP200 is a very good combo but only on XLR

IMG_20200602_090423-01.jpeg

I couldn't decide so I got them both, DX7 Pro and SP200

The results are quite interesting.

On DX7PRO, using it as an AIO unit is really brought A2C to life. Sound stage is somehow wider, more details, and significantly improvement on bass impact. BUT it lacks of control (don't know how to explain this)

DX7PRO+SP200 I've got different results from RCA and XLR

RCA: I'm not sure what went wrong here but it sounds really bad like it doesn't have enough juice for A2C

On the other hand, XLR has all the goods from DX7PRO and has more control (again dunno how to describe this)

Lastly, I'm a HIFI noob, please take my comment with the grain of salt.

This is not uncommon. Many balanced amps have 2x the power coming out of balanced, also the circuits are typically optimized for balanced output, single-ended is "for free" for gear that's SE only, but since the optimization is for the balanced you get better results.

I think this is why many people think balanced amps are better; if you a/b to the single-ended the balanced often sounds better. BUT, a good single-ended amp optimized for single-ended can sound just as good.

As headphones designer/manufacturer I would be very happy with such a review:

Review of the Aeon 2 Closed in Hifi+

Oh yeah. :)

A2 has been getting tons of great reviews recently, check our PR page here if you're interested!

So, AFO1 has more warmth than AFC1. I'm pretty sure the AFO1 is on my limit of how warm I like my headphone.

Big question now.

Do the AFO2 have just more bass level, or are they also warmer than the AFO1? As in the contrabass register sounding warmer on the AFO2 vs AFO1 and/or piano and drums having less attack, pop with the AFO2? Also do cymbals and high hats have more energy/presence with the AFO2?

To my ears the AFO2 is not any warmer-sounding than the AFO1. I own both the Aeon 1 Open and Closed and I had an opportunity to listen to the Aeon 2 Open and Closed version a while back and added my notes from that session below:

The first impression is that the two Aeon 2s are much more similar to each other than the original Aeons are. The original Aeon Closed is very open and neutral where the Open version has a more laid-back and warmer (even darker) sound. Both are very good and I enjoy both of them for different reasons.

Initially I thought that the two Aeon 2s sounded very similar, so much in fact that I wasn’t sure that I would be able to tell them apart in a blind test. However, after listening for a while I think that the closed version has a bit more energy in the midrange, where the open version seems to have a bit more bass and treble – it’s almost as if the closed version is the neutral, serious headphone and the open version is the party headphone. Silly comparison, I know, but seriously both headphones sound very good and the differences between them are rather small, at least to my ears. YMMV, as always.

I also tried to compare the Aeon 1 Open and the Aeon 2 Open to see what the differences are, and while there definitely are differences, to my ears they are quite small. I would need more time (and preferably my own DAC/amp chain) to nail down the specific differences. Good thing that The Source AV has such a broad selection of headphones available to demo! I didn’t have time to compare the closed versions, but my guess (based on admittedly unreliable auditory memory) is that the differences between the closed versions would be larger than for the open versions.

I’ve really been enjoying my Aeon2 closed. I went quickly from ether CX, to aeon open X, to the Aeon2 closed. There seems to be an immediate and clear increase in resolution moving from each headphone to the next. Not sure if this is reality but it was my thoughtas I moved through that progression.

nice to see a lot of other folks here enjoying a product from a local (to me) company
