Curiosity got the better of me, so I called Grado today to ask about the drivers in the MS2i. The woman on the phone didn't know off hand, so she went to ask someone. When she returned, she told me that it wasn't a driver based off of any other from the Grado line.

"Not the 225 or 325?" I asked.

"Not the 225, or 325." She replied.

"They're specific to Alessandro, and only made for those headphones."

Huh, did she just ask the wrong person there? Is that in any way true? Something about that doesn't add up to me...

It's true. You could say that the MS-1, MS-2 and MS-Pro are the "Alessandro Versions" of the SR125, SR325, and RS-1, especially since the housings are so similar, but in truth John Grado stated in his interview with us that the drivers in there aren't tweaks - they are entirely new designs made with Alessandro's input on the specs.

So I suppose this is a good time to ask... where exactly are drivers made? Are the drivers made IN Brooklyn, or elsewhere? Isn't that a pretty precise process?

True. They are different designs based on collaboration between George Alessandro and John Grado.

No-one knows where Grado drivers come from, AFAIK. There was a thread a while ago which speculated they were a bulk order type from Taiwan or Japan or something, and Grado only manufactured the voice coils, but it kinda petered out in the end.
