I think I put my order in for it in time -- I received an e-mail saying the seller just has to confirm it.

THAT should be a good read:

a line-up review inc. the near-mythical Optimus 3400, the Radio Shack 3904 and the others that Jude has about him...

i'd read it, and push it to others

maybe tell Tandy and the other manufacturers what they're doing wrong, to boot!

Was it really going for 10 bucks or was that a typo?

Advance Dog,

Thanks for the heads-up on this one. It arrived a couple days ago.

The headphone out is pretty much shot -- intermittent channels (yes, both). Volume control doesn't work well -- like full-on or full-off. But, as it turns out, I don't really use the built-in headphone outs of portables, and....

....the line out works perfectly. As does the transport. Laser looks clean, with no residue to indicate the owner ever tried to clean it (this often turns out bad).

It is a very nice sounding player so far, and has replaced my Radio Shack CD-3904 in my portable rig. Detailed for a portable, while still being smooth and unfatiguing. Better soundstage than both my quite-old Panasonic and CD-3904. Bel Canto DAC 2 or Creek CD53 it certainly ain't, but it sure is surprisingly good for a portable on the whole, sonically.

I will miss the skip protection when I'm walking around (I only used it when absolutely necessary on the 3904).

Thanks again, Advance Dog. With shipping, it came out to around $18, which was the best eighteen bucks I've spent in a while.

-- Jude --

no wonder it was only $10.00!

am glad i didn't get it as i would use the headphone straight out til i can get an amp...the guy on Half.com never mentioned any problem with it when i questioned him

but if you ever get tired of the 3904, it sounds like like my digital portable cuppa tea

Jude - have you tried using it as just a transport, a la the Stereophile review? Apparently clamping it between the pages of a big dictionary helps...
