The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

To my shock this has happened to my 1266.
I have had them for just under 2 years with no issues.
I rarely swap the [ad position as I have found the one I prefer. Looks like it’s glue and it’s melting , also the magnets may not be clamping properly .
What could have caused this and more importantly what do I need to do
OK I will contact Abyss to see what I can do about this and if it is covered under the warranty.

Just a couple of things if you guys could help.
I always assumed it was the magnets clamping that held the pads on , is it the glue? If it is then surely this is going to be an ongoing issue.
If the pads need replacing who does it? I am in the UK, will they need to be sent away?
Is this a common issue? Like to me this seems rather poor for a 6K headphone.

Hi all,

I was very interested in picking up an Abyss AB 1266 and I wanted to listen to it at Canjam to compare against my LCD 4. I was unfortunately disappointed in the timbre/realism of instruments that this headphone produced. Acoustic guitars sounded really off to me and as an acoustic guitar player this was a big turn off for me and it did not compare to the LCD 4 in this regard. I was impressed by the speed and bass for electronic music but this is not enough for me to warrant a purchase.

I was wondering what you think of the timbre of instruments on this headphone as it brought up a few red flags for me.

Personally the AB 1266 is arguably the TOTL planar neck and neck with Susvara ( its a preference kinda thing) they both are IMHO the best on the Market. And the Abyss guys are terrific to deal with. Timbre on Susvara i give a 10. I Give AB 1266 a 9.75 that close IMO but a different presentation preference etc

AB-1266 Phi TC doesn't have the most real timbre for instruments.

What gear did you listen to AB-1266 Phi TC with?
Different amps and DACs can help with the tonality.

Switch to tubes. Then check your red flags.

I had the Abyss CC and sold it for that specific reason. If timbre accuracy is important for you, then you have to fond somewhere else. Abyss is outstanding but that is its weak point.

It gets gradually better with the TC, Superconductor cable and a highend tubeamp (Wa33 / Envy), but yeah, if you want excellent timbre and realism, Susvara is your headphone. The dynamics and bass of the 1266 is unmatched though.

If you're used to the LCD-4's character and want more of that, it'd be really hard not to recommend the superconductor cable w/ the 1266. I primarily use the Burson Soloist GT, which leans bright-neutral. With the stock cable highs sounded tinny/metallic and mids were a bit recessed. Once I added the superconductor it was almost a different headphone. Thicker, more authoritative presentation while maintaining laser focused precision. One of the, if not the most, addictive headphones to listen to.
