What to do, what to do? First off, this thread could probably go in 3 or 4 forums, so I put it here because it's the most general. Now, for some background info. I had a birthday a few days ago. My parents would like to buy me a gift, around $100 (can be over, but that's my benchmark). I was originally planning on a LM3875-based amp, but because I would have to purchase all the tools and such for the project as well as the amp parts, the price quickly broke $180, and that was simply too much, especially considering I'd never even heard one. (I am working off the budget of a 16-year-old, who until this said birthday could not have a job.

) So, I've got about $100 to spend of my own cash, so let's bring the total max up to $200 USD.

So, now to headphones. I own ER6i's and love them. However, I'm thinking upgrade. That was the easy decision. The hard part is what to upgrade exactly? I'd thought about amping the Ety's, but since I do most of my listening at home I though I could probably do better with some cans. I originally was set on HD280 Pros, but kept looking around and took note of the ATH900s and HD555, as well as the HD25 and Grado's offerings.

I'm mostly a rock listener (Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, etc) but I also enjoy jazz and trance. At some point or another though, I do listen to almost every genre, so I'd like to avoid headphones that are outright terrible for a certain type of music (if there is such a thing.

)

I've also considered amps, possibly buying one myself for whatever headphones I may end up with. I had planned (several months ago) to get a LDM+, but since then have seen terrible reviews of it, and also (thanks to some monster reviews here) discovered about 15 other companys/amps that I had no idea were around. Needless to say, I'm somewhat clueless here and have a ton of research to do on these.

DACs. I know what they do and what they're used for, but thats about it. Would I benefit from one right now? My sound card is a SB Live! 5.1, which is OK, but far from optimal. Upstairs, currently any digital work is handled by a HK AVR210, again not bad, but I'm certain better is readily available. I just don't know what it is, or even where to look for it, whatever "it" is.

And finally, "other options". I don't know what it is, but if you feel I'd be better served putting my money somewhere else, please tell me.

Thanks guys. My forte is speakers and vintage gear, I'm afraid I just don't know much about headphones and true audiophile gear, so I await your advice.

if you're planning to take the A900s portably forget it. I hated my A700s when I took it out one day for my daily commute.

but I'm guessing the 900s are good cans. I loved my 700s and I did my last test on them (had them for 3 weeks, bought them brand new). I listen to almost everything except jazz, classical and country. I did some heavy RnB listening today and dance (basement jaxx), they sounded great for its price range.

A pair of SR-80s and an iBasso T2 out of your iPod or PC will make you a very happy guy. It's a somewhat modest setup, but it will get you moving.

You could go with an E-MU 0404 USB and run it out of your PC. But that doesn't leave you very much for a pair of headphones.

I vote the sr80 (great for rock and with taped bowls will have plenty of bass for trance) A new sound card like the chaintech av710 (only $25) and then spend the remaining on amp (not sure what to recommend here as I have not heard many amps).

I vote A900, no clue whats the complaining about...

I find Grados unbearable with trance.

audio technica series are awesome for you. look at the a900!

ur sound card should be fine with that headphone. no need for an amp at all!

sell ur old card and get the chaintech av-710 for a sound upgrade! (~$25)

PA2V2, which as a bonus is supposed to be great with grados.

Thats quite a few recommendations on the SR-80s, I've added them to the (very) shortlist.

The issue with the sound card is that as a gamer, I'm very dependent on Creative's EAX for positional audio in games. I mostly play BF2, which is hugely sound-dependent, so I don't think I could give up EAX just yet. I do love the AV710 though and recommend it to almost everybody who does not game and is on a budget.

The PA2V2 looks like a very nice amp, and the price is certainly right. I'll do more research into that one, hadn't heard much about it before. Thanks!

One particular set if you like a truly wide range of music would be the Alessandro MS-1.

...may like to check them out too. Quite similar to the SR-80, but perhaps not as much fun as SR-80 in a more neutral sort of way.

SR-80 + (Go-Vibe or PA2V2) would be my vote. Or you could do a CMOY for under $70 incl. tools and get some DIY experience.

If you really wanna keep your budget low, get a SR-60 and a PAV2V2. Very good start up setup and you can upgrade later for bowls pads for $15 and your SR-60 will sounds like a SR-80 (this might cause discussion, once some say the SR-60 with bowls sounds like the SR-80 others don't), or at least very similar ...

I can hear exactly where people are in Counter-Strike: Source (through walls) with my lowly AV710 sans EAX. Don't write off an excellent budget sound card so quickly.

Well, I've done more research and gotten a few more opinions, and if all goes as planned I'll soon be the new owner of SR-80's and a PA2V2.

Thanks for the help guys!
