Spring holding the pad distance up.

Very interesting. I love seeing out of the box thinking.

Was it a mod, or is it stock?

With that design, it appears the pad doesn’t seal against the cup. Unless I’m missing something.

Nope. It sure is some sort of a absorbing material. More like a foam than cotton thou.
What’s the wire coming out of the center of the Stax?
That ring came from stax themselves. Its installed by them. That Rod/Ring loops around the earpads. This makes the earpads spin 360. I hate that feature. So, you can remove the ring/rod with some force. And just attach the earpads around the housing. Station the earpads to your liking. The ring also lifts the pads up to and keeps it in shape. So, there are benefits also with that ring.

Yes! But to see them afloat once in a while here and there is always a sight to be seen.
