The HD580 and the HD600 the same thing??

I know that they discontinued the HD580 line, and brought the HD600 (I think...)
I also heard that they use the same drivers.... so are they basically identical headphones with a different head strap??

Yes. There are folks who believe the metal grills on the backs of the 600s make an audible difference. Some actually buy them from Senn and put them on their 580s. If you don't buy into that, the 580 and 600 are functionally identical.

There are the HD580, the HD580 Jubilee and the HD600. I've yet to see anyone here post a convincing blind test here that there is an audible difference... let along a HD580 stock versus one with HD600 screens. There may be, it's just not so obvious that age, etc. are not suspected. There are still HD580s to be found out there if you hunt, but they're drying up. Otherwise get what you can.

The only differences are: the composition of the headband and frames, the plastic grills of the HD580s, and how closely matched the drivers are (R & L). So... if you swap the grills, they should be identical in form and tech specs.

As noted below... I defy anyone to discern any difference in their sound, once the HD600 grills are installed on the HD580s (assuming the same setup and same number of hours of use). The composition of their headband and frames, and how closely the drivers are matched, simply won't make a discernable difference in the sound.

I have a modded HD580 that includes 600 grills and a 650 cable. I don't think the grills make any sonic difference but I think they are much nicer looking!

The 650 cable, on the other hand, brightens up the sound somewhat removes a little of the 'veil.'
