The Hassle-Free Headphone Recommendation Thread: Cans that sound great without amping, modding, or burn-in.

Shure SRH840 (SRH 440 was also pretty nice, when I listened to it from portable device)

AKG K550 if you achieve good seal

KRK KNS 6400 (I didn't like sound signature of 8400)

Sennheiser hd 25 1 i-ii

Sennheiser hd 5*5,5*8 series (only tried the 5*5 series though, but i see good comments about the 8 series too)

Focal Spirit One

Koss KSC 75 ,Koss Portapro

Sony MDR 1R but I listen to them at lower volumes mostly, due to their slightly midrange-colored signature, which I don't like so much at normal to higher volumes

Some others that I haven't tried but I would like to, for portable, non amped use,are CAL! ,Fischer Audio FA 003 etc, V MODA M80, Sennheiser momentum, audio technica ATH M50,Beyerdynamic dt235,Beyerdynamic DT 1350,sennheiser hd 219/229,sony zx700,some philips cans...

Thanks to all for the suggestions you've posted thus far.

I think there's probably quite a few unregistered users of head-fi who:

  1. don't want to carry around an amp
  2. don't want to make this a hobby for whatever reason (time, money, personal preference)
  3. think Beats look silly or feel too old for them (sort like seeing a 50-year old guy wearing skinny jeans or an Affliction t-shirt
    eek.gif
    )
  4. do care about sound quality and are willing to spend a few bucks
  5. do appreciate good design/craftsmanship

I figure this thread will help that segment out a bit and maybe save them some time if they come to head-fi for suggestions.

Thanks again for contributing, y'all!

It would help if the original post created a list with two basic subdivisions:

1. headphones categorized according to price

2. headphones categorized according to sound signature:

bass heavy
treble emphasis
neutral
bass and treble emphasis

That way, people could skip right to choices within their price/sound preference, ie headphones under $100 with a lot of bass, etc.

Hmmm. Not sure how to divide it up now that it's been set into motion. Maybe it could be organized in a similar way to some of the other big lists that exist on here....

I don't think I'd go as far as subdividing it by sound signature, but open vs. closed and different price points make sense. Well, maybe sound signatures wouldn't be much of a hassle now that I think about it...I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

HF1 or RS1 straight out of the macbook Pro.  Surprisingly good (for a laptop) amp-less grado woody synergy.  These definitely fall into the "V curve" category, with bass / upper midrange emphasis..

Wow @ M50's not being mentioned on here. Does this imply that they need an amp or that they just don't sound that great compared to the other cans listed?

Igrado's. Very nice right out of the box.

Sportapro's are a crazy bargain. A sound signature very similar to the portapro's, but with a bit less of the 'boom boom' and 'thump thump' although there is still plenty of that.

Hey all, new here. I got my income tax recently and I want to step up from my iPhone ear buds to some full-size, closed over-ear headphones. I have really small ears so buds and on-ear headphones are extremely uncomfortable for me to wear. Price point isn't exactly a deciding factor but I dont see myself spending more than 250 for headphones that will be only for recreation. When I got my check, I put on my clothes and told my brother I was going to go buy some Beats Studios. He laughed at me and pointed me to this website. Initial research tells me that Beats are ripoffs. Most of The music I listen to is Hip Hop and Chillstep. With some punk rock like The Foo Fighters and Rise Against thrown in there. Can Anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in Advance
