I am finding a head unit with Bluetooth capability for using my mobile phone on road. I just found that new head units not only show incomming calls but also receive music played from mobile phones, with A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) and AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) features. You may imagine you select a song on your mobile phone, then "send" it to you car audio system. You can also control the head unit from your phone. That's easy.

The only thing you need to make sure is your mobile phone supports A2DP and AVRCP, plus a 4GB memory card for carrying your music collection every where with you.

Some people already bought new Sony music phones and trashed their iPods away !

It's an interesting idea.

I have a Sony WM800 and a WM810 though and have tested them both unamped and amped via a Corda porta but they are noticably inferior sounding to my 3G ipod.

The main issue with them too is that the software is pretty flaky. The 810 is better in this regard but the 800 has problems copying multiple files across USB and would be dangerous to use whilst driving.

If the card could be read by a Sony car head that would be useful or else perhaps wireless networking as bluetooth seems quite slow at present.

The Ipod FM transmitter is probably a better solution right now.

Thinking a step ahead of that is my current view of the future. I feel that broadband WiFi will become ubiquitous, and that online personal storage and online content providing will be easy to use and affordable. I personally think that as this phases in, that the "dedicated" PC or phone or iPod will fade into "access" devices of varying size, audio reproduction quality, or video quality. All of your subscription content, and personally stored music will be available on whatever device you are sitting at, driving in, or carrying with.

There are plenty of problems with this rosy picture though as there are always going to be competing systems and while this undoubtedly drives the technology forward it also confuses the market to some degree and will continue to do so.
There is also the massive legal problem with this idea of storing copyrighted material which mp3.com found out and youtube are coming to terms with now.

WiFi isn't power-supply friendly as Bluetooth.
