My Protector has clocked just over 200 hours.  The sound remains more or less the same, may be it has changed slightly because the listening experience has been less fatigue.  I was hoping balanced Sennheiser HD650 would stop me from getting Sennheiser HD800, but now I'm curious about balanced HD800. 

 
I have no regret about buying this amp.  Balanced mode provides better detail, bass and vocal to the HD650.

has anyone tried RS-1 single ended with protector? will they be well taken care of? or should I get an HD650 with balanced cable for the same cost

No idea, but balanced use is the whole point of this amp and where it really shines

Somewhere in the thread I think Ray indicted if you really want SE, the SR-71A is probably the best it is also the larger of his portables.

I auditioned a protector with my SE RS-1 for a couple of hours and had no complaints.  I thought it performed at least on par with my SR71's.

I am listening to "Carmen-Fantasie" played by Anne-Sophie Mutter with my SE RS-1.  I really enjoy it and the bass sound fuller than I remember on the RS-1.

My recabled balanced T1 Telsa came in yesterday and I hooked them up to the Protector and was amazed at how well the Protector drove them.  I really didn't expect that given they are 600 ohm.  They were very musical right from the start.

Ok, I know that I shouldn't even ask this,  BUT has anyone tried their AKG K-1000 with the Protector?   I sold my K1K and I am looking for a low ser. no. unit at reasonable cost.  So I can't test it myself.
