The headphone jack on my x5 has been having issues, the left channel cuts in and out constantly. i have tried different plugs and to no avail. I only use it for yard work so not a huge deal as i have an old phone i can use to play flac.

how easy is this to replace?

Of course, this all hinges on the ES9601 actually being an IC that sounds good, and while I tend to trust what ESS is doing, the ES9601 has not yet been released and is therefore unproven. It also remains to be seen whether or not the 9601 will have handicaps such as that of the TPA6120A2 --- while the 6120 also has great performance numbers and actually does sound great in the hands of the right engineer, it does require output current resistance to prevent instability, and that's why almost all TPA6120 amps have 10 ohms of output Z. Some have tried using an inductive solution in lieu of resistors, but if not implemented correctly, it's easy for inductors to introduce a lot of noise into the system.

I know this is old, but what does that mean "require output current resistance?"
In a different thread I read if you used positive and negative power rails on 6120 then you don't need caps to remove DC.
So is that related or something totally different?
Because I'm learning by reading threads on here, I know it's dangerous, that if you used a TI power chip to run power rails on TI 6120 then you don't worry about handicaps or caps. 6120 amp is the first amp that I really found to deliver a lot of power to a headphone. Yeah I know, I wouldn't know since I don't have argons. But still.

I'd also like to know what the largest card you can use. I have had a situation where a card was readable, but not writable to in the X5. You would have to remove it to alter its contents. I think it was a 400GB Sandisk.

Can someone give me a shortlist of IEMs for under about £150 that will work well with the X5?

I'll Google the reviews to see what sonic signature seems best I live on a small island, so can't listen to anything. It would help if they were available for Amazon.co.uk.

Is there a brief review of the X5 firmware versions? I recall reading that some versions around 2.0 was had light bass for example, but I can not find this source. I am on the latest 2.7 version at the moment and I love the detail of the sound, but the bass is overpowering the vocals somewhat. My headphones are Westone UM3x which I love for usually balanced sound and sound decay. The idea is to downgrade firmware to bass light version, but the problem is finding it

Has anyone had any luck using their X5 with Fiio FH3's? Just got a pair of FH3's as my first "real" IEMs, and get a good amount of static out of the X5. I get the FH3's are sensitive, but I thought the X5 gave pretty clean output?

Can't help you with the FH3 question, but perhaps there's something wrong with your X5, or perhaps you're overloading your FH3s. Make sure you have the volume range set to low.

Here's another question, if anyone is listening. I had a problem with my home DAC, so I connected my X5 and set it to DAC mode, connected to my headphone amp. The display on the X5 reads 44kHz/24bit for all the files I've tried to play. I'm using Tidal, and have played their "Master" files, which are all supposed to be hi-rez, high bit-rate files, presumably 96kHz or higher sampling frequencies. Is the X5 DAC downsampling, or is it playing these files at their native sampling rate and not telling me so, is it broken or what?

Well there's a lot of tomfoolery involved in getting a system to play bitperfect throughout. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. This legacy piece of player certainly can't unfold MQA.
