Hi Arielp,
i see that the post i have a question to is a little bit old  (http://www.head-fi.org/t/743704/the-fiio-x3-2nd-gen-ex-x3k-x3ii-thread-192k-24b-cs4398-native-dsd-usb-dac-with-lo-and-inline-remote/8250#post_12644499),
but i have a new X3 2nd gen.
My old one used your very nice and using readable Fonts! compiled FW.
Now the dropbox links are broken.
Is there any Chance to have a link to the required FW?

FiiO product runs are 18 to 24 months and this is the same answer FiiO will give you.  No one knows when the next gen model will be out, but based on that timeline, it could happen any day now.

Well, from what I've read the Cayin N3 is supposed to stomp all over the X1v2 - sound and function. Shanling M2 (maybe m2s) is supposed to be sweet as well.

If you mean apple lossless format, the X3II can support up to 192 kHz/24 bit. If you mean those are DRM, the X3II doesn't support.

I really hope that FiiO does not add a volume wheel like that. Or at all 

 
Even if we take care of a DAP, it is best to not have volume wheels if those can break.
