well ive searched on these boards and kinda got mixed results

im actually thinking about purchasing sum new portable buds. Im looking into the ER-4 line. What is the actual sonic difference in the line up between these 3 ?

ER-4S (Stereo)
ER-4P (Power)
ER-4B (Binaural)

I don't know much about the ER-4B, but the main difference is that the 4P is made so that it's much more easily drivable through a portable source. I bought the ER-4P as well as an adapter to turn it into the 4S. I've been pretty satisfied with using it as it is, but one day, I decided to use the adapter and see what happens: just as expected, there was a significant volume decrease since it now required more power to drive.

If you don't plan on using an amp, then the ER-4P would be your best bet. If you'll be using an amp, then you can get the 4P and a 4S adapter for flexibility, or get the 4S if you're confident that it's what you want. I hear that the 4S produces sound more accurately and "better", but since I don't use an amp currently (I don't like carrying my TotalAirhead), there's no way that I can use the 4S adapter and still enjoy the music.

BTW, I think the P in ER-4P stands for portable. I didn't intend to criticize you, just wanted to let you know, that's all.

Acually, the P does stand for power.

The S model is simply harder to drive, but is more detailed, and just sounds plain better, if well fed.

It does?

Strange way of naming it since it requires less power. Oh well. I guess I just don't get the Ety marketing logic. LOL

I disagree that the ER4S sounds better than the ER4P if well fed. I have the P with the S adaptor. The P sounds much better whether out of a portable or through my home rig with a Cosmic amp.

I've said before that the ER4P is the best $270 I've ever spent. The adaptor on the other hand I shoud sell since I haven't used it in months and most likely will never use it again.

I've heard that the 4B is meant solely for Biurnal recordings and thus has a funny response curve designed to promote a good sound stage with biurnal recordings... If it is used on regular recordings people say it sounds too bright and harsh.

Explain yourself, I would go for the P because you can make it an S later. Just my $.02

Don't you mean the P's?

The B's are designed specifically for binaural recordings. Although a few members like them for normal recordings, they aren't intended to be used that way.

Unless you're only going to be using them with a good amp, I would personally go for the P, since they can be driven by basically anything. The P, along with the P -> S adapter, give you the most flexibility.
