Tried two Brainwavz XL round pads on my new Audio Technica Kokutan ATH-AWKT.
Stock pads are flat and stiff. They never sit quite right on my head, they do seal, but because they’re so flat and stiff, it doesn’t feel like it. They’re very loose and isolation really suffers because of this.
Brainwavz XL Micro Suede-
Incredibly comfortable. These feel like the Clear MG pads if you’re familiar with them, extremely soft, smooth, and plush. However, I was shocked how drastically these changed the sound. The stock AWKT sound very, very big, open, 3d/holographic, and have tons of treble energy. I thought they might be too bright sometimes, but the Micro Suede pads remove way too much of the highs for me. They also add a noticeable amount of bass and lower mids. Orchestral tracks that before had stunning clarity and tonal balance now sound veiled and muddy. Disappointed with these overall. If you like a warm signature though, you might like them, but they just remove too much treble and the highs sound like they hit a brick ceiling and detail suffers. Isolation is amazing.
Brainwavz XL HYBRID- absolute perfection. Sound signature is warmed up JUST A TAD, treble energy and extension is still there, stage and imaging is still stunning, but they are so, so, so much more comfortable than stock. Revealing, neutral/balanced, retaining all of the jaw-dropping detail and clarity as stock pads with perfect figment. Not as comfortable as micro suede, but the sound and fit together make these an absolute must have for the ATH AWKT (also the AWAS or any similarly sized headphone that may suffer from the “pancake-pad syndrome”. Isolation for both pad sets are neck-and-neck, with the weight and plushness of microsuede possibly taking the lead in isolation, but it’s really close and possibly negligible.
