So for iphone or android phones I don't need this unless I get a real DAC or a good home system? For a phone, better to get the 8323?

The M50's straight cable is pretty long, so probably not very good for portable use, considering you are using them on smart phone.  I don't know how you like the M50 coiled cable version though.
I read that the Beyer felt/velour pad is compatible with both 8323 and M50.  Probably doesn't hurt much to try 8323 for less than $30 first.

Not much but might come in handy if you're planning on buying something from J&R:

$5 off $75 w/ coupon code JRSUMMER

You won't need an upgrade until you're wanting to spend about...3 to 4 times that price.

I've never compared them. I will say that the 598s don't really need an amp though. IMO of course.

The 598 is one of the most impressive values in this hobby, in my opinion.

So, how much better are the 598's over the 558's for ipod w/ amp mp3 listening?

Dakmart.com has the 558's for $99, not refurb or b stock!  Lots of bad reviews on them tho??

They're refurbished. Dakmart is an authorized dealer and as such can't advertise non-refurbished Sennheisers for less than MSRP. Looks like they've just forgotten to mention that they are refurbished/b-stock.

Still a good deal though and they are probably like-new.

So no one can vouch for these Sennheiser refurbs on Dakmart? Surely there are some people here that have bought them before...

That's where I bought my 598s and they were in perfect condition.

I would have to disagree. HD580 = HD600 for $100 USD. Now that's a sweet deal

Also, MEElectronics CC51P for $25 at Newegg.

I think he meant currently. The 580 is out of production.

Supposedly "Like New - Open Box" but the box had never been opened.

Awesome. Thanks for the comments. I assumed as much but I didn't want to make any purchases from Dakmart until I heard from some fellow head-fi'ers. I'll probably be buying a pair of refurbished Senns from them for a friend. Now I just need to decide which ones to get...
