AKG K450 (refurbished): $39.99 shipped, Amazon third party seller

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0028N78C0/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished

Given the price, I was suspecting a fake, but I ordered one anyway and it looks authentic (when compared to online photos and descriptions detailing fakes), and it sounds good (in line with the other consumer AKG products I own). No retail box, but it does come in its original case with all accessories and paperwork and looks brand new. Who knows what the story behind these is because I'd never seen advertised a "refurbished" AKG before.

Nice find. If they're anything like the K422 they're definitely worth that price.

There's an HD800 on ebay with a start bid of 900 and no bids as of yet...

There might be a reason though... Almost no description, seller has 0 feedback, and no pictures of actual item...

I'd prefer ordering the HD800s from Crutchfield refurb:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-LKqWEVaXnGK/p_143HD800R/Sennheiser-HD-800-Factory-Refurbished.html

It is "just" $1100 and comes with warranty and they accept returns, etc. and of course free shipping and offer great service... For these type of buys (i.e. expensive) I usually go through proper channels (includes head-fiers listing on these forums!). No description, no cables, no photos == NO DICE!

Vocal to justify the purchase maybe? In all seriousness though buying it without a cable is rough. Get it...no way to test it, past return date. Bam. Broken headphones.

I guess, but don't 65+% of HD800 users recable anyways? Or are the recablers just a (very) vocal minority?

To be honest if I was buying something that expensive anyways; I'd probably just buy it from the manufacturer themselves rather than take the risk. Just me though.

Yup.  I got mine a few months back.  I know I've said this before here, but mine were new- I don't care what that description says.  =)  I really think it's because the outer box had one 1/2" tear on the corner that they couldn't sell these as new.  I can't believe they still have these in stock.  Don't forget that Crutchfield also has a 60-day return policy, free shipping, and 'no tax' in most places.
