I've read that there are small physical differences in the pads (very small), and also small sonic differences, probably resulting from tweak of the pads. I wouldn't expect any of these differences to be significant in real use, though...I mean, same frame, same driver.

Yes. This was all hammered out in the X2 thread. There was speculation for a long time, until some individual members were able to A/B both. Also someone conversed with a Philips engineer, who verified that the sound tuning was slightly tweaked for the X2HR.
In addition to the slightly tweaked sound tuning, Philips revised the headband and ear pad material.
I'm really sorry to hear that. I've bought a ton of stuff (all computer- and/or home office-related) from NewEgg over the years. Always regarded them as a top online retailer...
In short: Ether C with an updated tuning, non-swivel cups (like Aeon), no hard case, XLR cable + 6.35mm -> 3.5mm adapter for $899 ($100 less than the refurbished Ether C's).
Not a bad deal if you ask me, however I currently have a set of Ether's in for upgrade to Ether C Flow, so it's safe to say, I'm out of this drop
