Hello,
I hate paying the big price for Grado headphones (especially on Ebay) because I find that the price is going up way too fast. I always try to find deals somewhere to get an adequate price for things I want. So I waited, waited (not as long as Killercrush) and finally I found a pair here in Quebec! A miracle if you ask me! The guy was 21 years old and was a true audiophile. He wasn't too much into headphones and he preferred the simplicity of his SR-80 to the big heavy metal of the HP-2 (mostly for portable use). He got them in a cable deal (bought some cables and they were included in the deal) So I was glad I could buy them from him; I can try them, see their physical state, make my choice in person if I take them or not. I was fortunate because the guy made me an excellent price (i made an offer he accepted) so I was more than happy, and mostly, I was able to keep up my ideas, because I wanted these babies so much I was ready to pay 1150$US +++ which is a big amount that I'm not comfortable to put on headphones (amplifier, DAC yes, headphones no). They are pretty much in good shape, except for a small dent in the cable (superficial). I was afraid about the fact that the lettering was gone, but as you'll see, they are so much sexy this way I couldn't beleive it.
As a mini-review, these remind me of my SR-100 (same drivers). BUT, they have that smooth sound, that delicate signature, unbelievable... I didn't hear them out of my Melos SHA-Gold and I can hear the difference directly out of my Creative Zen Vision:M. They sound so good, much better than the PS-1 I listen to and I cannot imagine how those headphones will sound out of my Squeezebox to Melos MAX3R to Melos SHA-Gold if it already sound awesome from my Creative Zen Vision:M. I'll give some reviews later.
Anyway that is a big jump for me in the audiophile world, especially since I'm a big Grado fan and I just bought the holy grail of every Grado fan out there. I'll continue my journey to find every vintage Grado pieces because I'm having so much fun. This is a great hobby and seriously, every Grado product has a piece of history behind it and I find it wonderful to explore this history. I could collect turntables, speakers, even cables, but collecting those headphones is really something different.
