I guess I'm a basshead. No matter what pair of headphones I use, I always seem to find fault with the bass. All the talk about Darth Beyers, the PS-1 and L3000 made me wonder what I was missing. But now I'm in a position to find out. Of course, I'm not looking to spend over $1000 on a pair of headphones (not yet at least

). But I've found myself with two options.

The RS-1...I listen to rock and metal. Grados are cited as the de facto standard for such genres. While I've never personally listened to a pair of Grados, I figure why not go for the gusto.

Darth Beyers...The bass of the DT770 is legendary. The Darth Beyers are said to take the DT770 to another level without losing the legendary bass.

I'd like to give the RS-1 (with flat pads, of course) a shot, but I'm afraid the comfort (or potential lack thereof) would detract from my enjoyment of these cans. With the Darth Beyers, I know comfort won't be an issue. Needless to say, I'm leaning towards Darth Beyers.

So, does it sound like Darth Beyers are in my future?

Hello there,

May I invite you to join the Darth side!!!

I have made a post comparing the stock 770 pro and the V3-O. There is a night and day difference in between the two! Here.

I do own a 325i re-cabled pair of Grado and I find the bass is nothing close to the Darth's, it is accurate somehow the bass is punchy and very present but the Darth's has much more punch. I love both those cans for different reasons. I must say I really enjoy the Darth's with drum heavy death metal and the Grado's for anything more guitar oriented! The mids are more forward and these cans have a really nice clarity.

Believe me, I've seen that thread. Reading through it just made me want Darth Beyers even more. I think it may be time to finally give in to the temptation of the dark side...

Did you have to supply the leather pads yourself?

This thread made at least 2 head-fi'ers buy Darth's.

I have bought the pads off members on this forum. Every time I put them on I feel surrounded by elegance and isolation, I feel they are more supportive also. :P

I've been a Darth user for some time and now on my 3rd and 4th pairs - but my primary listening is Jazz, with classical on the side. Recently, I sold Denon D2000 and got a pair of Grado RS-2. In terms of comfort, you really shouldn't worry about the woody-bodied Grado. It is a matter of breaking in the earpads........then secondarily, adjusting the fit until you find out what works for you. Their extremely light weight also aid the quest for comfort.
I don't see a better presentation for your listening interests (though you could consider PS-1 or L3000 if you get in the position to pay lots of $). So, stick to Alessandro MS Pro, RS-1 or 2. A side note re bass - while I haven't had the opportunity to really fool with my Grado - Playing them thru iModded iPod and Xin Supermini LE - I activated the bass boost switch (primarily intended for Ety er4 [Dr. Xin's favorites]) on the LE ......it goes very well with them. That might be a direction for you to explore.

I've heard more expensive Grados than my 325i but none compare to the bass quantity that you get with DBs. With some electronic music my 325i is very impressive with its tight bass but still doesn't skull slam. Comfort, isolation & great sound is Darth Beyer.

More bass quantity is what I'm looking for. Definitely feeling the pull of the dark side now...
