Is it just me, or does this band sound great w/decent cans. Right now, i've been infatuated with staring at the sea. Anyone else got good dark/80s recommendations?

I definitely dig the cure, one of my all time favorites. 'the head on the door' is my favorite album, but the early stuff and the superb later singles are great too. other bands you might like if you like the cure: joy division, the smiths, the pixies, new order, siouxsie and the banshees (robert smith played in this band for a while), nick cave, american music club.

Head on the Door is my favorite Cure album, too, but the best memories and the best sounding for headphones, in my opinion, is Disintegration. Show and Paris are also great for live albums.

the cure definitely kicks ass. if you want dark and 80's, then nothing tops depeche mode.

i have the lp for kiss me kiss me kiss me. i've been listening to the tape of it every morning as i get ready for work. i like it but can only take it in small doses. the whiney vocals get to me after a while. the lead singer looks a little like edward scissorhands to me.

i like bauhaus but sometimes they're a little too cheesy for me ('bela lugosi's dead') but i love 'the passion of lovers'. depeche mode is the poor man's new order/joy division in my opinion; they're good but i can't get over that gap commercial with 'just can't get enough'. back to the cure, robert smith's voice is definitely not for everyone but if you can stand it the lyrics are worth it. what does everyone think of the last album, bloodflowers?

my absolute favorite bauhaus release is "swing the heartache". it has stripped down versions of their songs recorded for the bbc.

joy division is some good dark stuff, but they seemed to have lost that when they became new order. and the just can't get enough thing probably had more to do with vince clarke (of erasure) than depeche mode. he wrote the song back when he founded dm, and i believe he is the one with the rights to the song, not dm.

and disintegration kicks ass.

Get the best of from 97 Galore. Focuses on later material. Sound quality is phenonemal. "Just Like Heaven" has all these subtle effects that are lost on the car radio. I think there's even a newer one, but I can't vouch for sound quality.

the problem with galore is that it isn't nearly as depressing as the cure can be. I would recommend not buying their live album "show" because the quality sucks and there are no real segues between songs.

Bloodflowers was cool... not a fave cd, though.

Cure does have a dark trilogy of CDs that are quite good for a mainstream band.
-Faith
-Pornography
-Disintegration, very dark, very good

Joy Division
1st two CDs are dark masterpeices, and to get important non album material you must get the "substance" collection.

Sisters of Mercy
Dark lords of goth, all their great material was released on early EPs, fortunately they are all collected on the CD "some girls wander by"

Bauhaus
Best way to go here is the two CD collection "1979-83 Vol 1&2" contains all their best known hits, including hard to find non album tracks.

Depeche Mode
They also have a dark trilogy, maybe more like lights turned down vs dark, but still more serious than earlier material.

The Cure are really rather good, aren't they? Disintegration is probably my favourite album, but have you ever heard Entreat, the live version? Bloodflowers, the last original album is great, very fatalistic.
As for Bauhaus, another recommendation would be Gotham, the live recording of there reunion concert, it's bloody fantastic!

I have to rebuild my Cure and New order collections after a nasty incident with someone deciding that they deserved them all more than me

Got all the depeche mode albums tho and my girlfriend has much siouxie, bauhaus, joy division, sisters of mercy etc on lp

I think my favourite albums would be wish, disintegration and entreat, although they're not always much fun to listen to really..

As for new order - great stuff to listen to when going out, and I find depeche mode to make good driving music strangely enough.

Funnily enough I'm currently listening to "Winters of Discontent; The Peel Sessions" which includes Siouxie, the stranglers, buzzcocks, adam and the ants, the damned, echo and the bunnymen, birthday party etc etc - all fun stuff

On the topic of The Cure, though, I've hated EVERY album upon release and then grown to love it... funny that, but it happens every single time.

They are absolutely brilliant live, and it's worth finding live videos of them, which I hope they release on DVD.
