I need headphones, something I don't cram into my ears, I have marshmallows and like them for the first hour or so. I want something comfy with enough isolation to walk outside in urban traffic and doesn't leak in a quiet room. I don't care how much of a geek I look like walking around in them or if they are extremely portable. I'll give a $150USD price cap, but $100 would be better. Sound is really important but I know I'm asking for cheap closed cans so they don't have to be perfect. Music styles include Metal, Progressive, Death Metal, Punk, Old Rock, and at some points everything else.

try a pair of Ultrasones. but my number favourite portable cans are the Sennheiser HD25, simply because the earcups are smaller than your average 'fullsize headphones'

the HD25's are on the left, Ultrasone 750 middle, Denon AH-D1000 right

Man, you're approaching this question 8 ways from Sunday.

Here is the closest thing to a definitive answer that you are going to get. However, the HD280s weren't reviewed and aren't being talked about much and it seems like that's the direction you want to go.

By the way, don't be swayed from taking a serious look at the RP21s just because some jackass in another thread (who recommended $1500 earphones when you asked for $100 headphones) called them fanboy FOTM cans. There is plenty of objective advice being offered in that thread and Skylab is no Fanboy . . . well OK, maybe of Beyers (sorry Sky

).

I had Sennheiser HD25-1 and sold them for two reasons: 1) didn't like the sound signature, 2) they were too uncomfortable for me - I wear glasses.

The HD280 may be a good alternative but they are much bigger. BTW, the isolation claimed by HD280 referes to higher frequencies - lower frequencies like traffic/subway/etc. are attenuated much less.

Another thing may be the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7. These are active noise cancellers. I picked them up today and didn't have a chance to compare them to HD280 but even without burning-in and with NC engaged I like the sound signature better. And they are smaller than HD280.

I have the ES7 and I really like them when I'm walking around town with my Ipod. I do notice with those types of cans, it also depends on how loud you play your music and of course it going to depend on the can, so I can't state that I have my Ipod volume at only halfway. But, I don't listen to my music that loud and I think they do well in regards to keeping the external sound out. I did try a friend's ATH-ANC7 and they were comfortable, and I couldn't hear the external sound at all. Good luck.
