*is searching for the make-the-dac-thread-sticky-petition under his table* ... douh' can't find it!

Make this sticky, please!

(2/3 of the DIY-DAC websites are really hard to find!)

best regards,
bearmann

PS.: I think a link or two to the respective Dicussions on head-fi would be a good idea...

anyone know why the Opus is always referred to as a DIY dac when the only way you can buy it is fully assembled?

Russ insists he will sell you a bare PCB if you want one, but to some degree I agree. Of course, the casework etc. is still your own, but it's a prebuilt 'module'. I guess it's DIY because it's not quite a polished commercial product being sold for profit?

I started adding head-fi threads/discussions as per your request. If anyone else has other threads that they think should be linked, let me know. I will consider adding them, if they are a) dedicated to a particular DIY DAC and b) informative.

Of all the DAC's listed in the original post, which ones would be considered the top 3?

I have the parts for a PPAv2 and a STEPS coming that I'll be building and I'm trying to decide on a DAC. I do my music listening at my computer with a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's. I am currently listeing to music through my X-fi Platinum sound card via the headphone jack. I've done alot of searching on these forums over the past few days and it seems like some DAC's aren't as good as the X-fi's. I'm trying to determine which ones are better so I don't end up downgrading.

TYI

[edit] The PPA and STEPS will be fully decked out with all optional parts & features including the crossfeed circuit.

Heck, I'll even sell a kit of all the SMD parts if you want to do the build yourself. Kitting it take just as long as building it (maybe longer actually), so price would be the same. You you want an unassembled kit, just drop an email with the order. Seriously

kipman, there's actually a newer project that peufeu is working on - involving ethernet and FPGA programming. IMHO, it's the coolest thing going in DIY. Anyway, I've linked to his What DAC (yeah I think What stands for what you're thinking).
