That is the first time I have heard that assertion. Please provide supporting links to assuage my cognitive dissonance.

At 100 dB SPL, the 32 Ω crosses 1% THD at 65 Hz while the 600 Ω crosses 1% THD at 100 Hz. The distortion spikes on the left channel of the 32 Ω are due to poor channel matching in the sample used.

Thanks for the charts. With the distortion spikes why didn't they retest instead of leaving it up to our imaginations? Do you have a comparison to the 250 ohm model? And for mastering/mixing, as these are studio headphones, how does this affect the studio engineer doing their work?

250 Ω is the worst version. To be honest, these headphones are useless for mixing. Almost any mix made on these will end up sounding dull on flat equipment. These are only useful for speech mastering to reduce sibilance in a mix.

Why would retesting matter on the 32 Ω version? We have the data for the right channel which does not have any unintended FR deviations.

Nah, there is no worst DT880. They are great for what they were designed to do and for the price. Have you considered the negative impact of resonance in the lower impedance 880?

You can’t make assumptions about how I use my DT880 for my studio. You know nothing about how I use it as part of my music work.

You also cannot make assumptions about this testing. A sample of 1 has no statistical power. You cannot generalize those results to other units.

Really great posts here lately. Accordingly, here are a couple of my favorite albums:

In classical, “Baroque Sine Wave Masterpieces”, and in blues “Sine Hound On My Trail”.

blah blah blah.. how does it syergize with your system? how does it SOUND TO YOU? You're just jerking things around. Enjoy your hobby, it's not mine. Take care. :)

I was looking for some advices about DT880 but ended up selling my headphones and buying an OLED oscilloscope.

I can’t stop watching my favorite tunes on it!

I was recently at the point of putting my DT880 600ohm up for sale when I tested it with a new driver tube in my Bottlehead Crack. It was a relatively cheap Electro-Harmonix 12AU7, which I didn't expect to work well with the DT880 since EH tubes tend to further emphasize highs. But strangely this combo is now my favorite. The DT880s sound completely transformed; from an increased holographic soundstage, to satisfying punch in the lows, growling mids and bright, yet smooth highs. The scaling on this pair of cans is just remarkable and its upper potential is hard to reconcile to the thin and sibilant sound signature I got from less ideal signal chains.

This specific chain is: Windows ASIO (full volume) to iDSD in preamp mode (full volume) into the Sinxger SA1 (preamp mode) then into the Bottlehead Crack (max volume). Volume control is on the Singxer. Subjectively it sounds amazing and it makes me enjoy the music more than any other setup I have tried.

👍 With the 600 ohms and power appetite, the DT-880 demands a good high output impedance, high voltage h/p/a. Nowadays, that means a good tube OTL like your BHC ! (I get my best results on the DT-880/600 with an OTL (Woo WA2)). Enjoy!
P.S., if you want to try other reasonably priced driver tubes, I suggest Genalex / Gold Lion 12AU7 and Brimar CV4003.

Another point about the DT-880 (600 ohms). If possible, have the detachable cable socket modification done. A good copper or silver cable of your choice is leagues better than the sorry excuse of a cable that is ‘stock’.
